A Catholic Professor Wonders What can be Done about Godless Notre Dame

I read a very long post on a Christian sight written by a retiring professor at Notre Dame. The professor is obviously a devout Catholic and vented his frustration that Notre Dame, which bills it Catholic roots prominently, does mostly nothing to keep the Catholic tradition embedded in the institution. To the contrary, he says nearly everyone from its Presidents to its Deans blow off, even make fun, of the faith. This goes on, he says, even though Notre Dame claims it considers its Catholic founding very important.

The retiring prof says institutions, especially those of higher education, should not be different than what they say they are. If it says it's Catholic it should be Catholic. He ignores the fact that in its documents one will find all kinds of goals and aspirations listed.

The prof says as many practicing Catholics as possible should be hired. While it must not discriminate, the secular people who have been hired should become familiar with the history and tenets on Catholicism. He wrote that he tried at various times the foster campus-wide and interdisciplinary discussions about Catholic theology such as presentations of various kinds about writing by Popes. Since participation was voluntary, few were interested. The goal in every corner of Notre Dame is to publish papers and bring in grant money. It's the same most everywhere. Some professor like this guy wanting to spend valuable time discussing the role of Catholicism in the University would be met by a collective eye roll.

He told of a young woman interviewing for a faculty position who is a devout Catholic found the experience off putting. During the interviews, she was told Notre Dame's Catholic link is an unimportant and largely ignored thing.

The question is, how can a major university be "Catholic" when the faith condemns divorce, gays and gay marriage, birth control, requires celibate clergy, thinks there was a virgin birth and that the dead come back to life? These ideas are out there in la la land and any real time link to them makes an institution a strange place.
