How Can Non Believers Handle Christmas
We all know suicides and mental troubles mount during this time of the year. I don't pretend to know or recommend how anyone else is to handle this. Besides all the "going home" and "being with friends and family" narratives, the hours of sunlight are few and most businesses are closed. There are any number of believers who will tell you, "Just go to a church" or "Just read the Bible story."
Many people I have known who have no particular thing or place to go during these holidays travel somewhere. Good for them.
As a young man, I spent a year in Puerto Rico. While it is not a foreign country, I felt quite like a foreigner there. There were cultural and language barriers. There were lots of holidays named after Saints. Some stores and restaurants closed, some were open. I had no understanding of this and spent a pleasant day catching up on whatever.
Perhaps thinking in that way can help some in the U.S. enjoy this holiday. That is, to consider Christmas some holiday celebrated by people in this country where some of us are, in some ways, foreigners. It's just a day where stuff is closed and one can spend it as one pleases.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of people are alone during this holiday. Most of them, I would guess, are happy and do just fine.
