Does it Seem to You Climate Change Problems are Accelerating
I live in land locked Iowa. Our casualty insurance rates have gone up because we live in the region where damaging winds, derechos, occur. The west coast has fires. Florida has hurricanes. These seem like small problems, however, compared to the constant warming. We all know warming will affect the food supply but also health. The link tells us we have passed the point of turn around. We lost the last decade that might have helped.
When we have an extreme weather event it is tempting to think it was unusual. As time goes on extremes happen more often so they become not unusual.
The link explains our recent history as a gamble. A decade ago warming was happening. The options were basically a.) do nothing and maybe the warming is merely a weather cycle that will cycle itself to something better or b.) do nothing and face the consequences. For the most part, the world, especially the U. S. chose to do nothing. The cycle did not "naturally" reverse itself. We are going to learn the consequences.
The link points out that the most serious consequences will be social ones. Those, often millions, who are faced to moving elsewhere or dying will move. Wherever they move that place will be under economic and political stress. I doubt the U.S. can stop massive border crossings at several locations.
In a rational world, plans would be underway to a.) minimize environmental damage and (b.) accommodate large numbers of refugees. We are mostly doing neither.
