One-Third of Americans Consult Tarot Cards and Astrology
I think it was almost a decade ago when I first read of brisk sales of tarot cards, astrology books and other such items that have long been assumed to be "fringe" or strange. Now perhaps we could call them "mainline."
Nancy Reagan was a believer in astrology. It is said she advised President Reagan when the time was better or worse to do certain things. Eventually, the President made a slip and mentioned this and an uproar followed.
"Systems" that have something to look at, something people can see, give orthodox Christianity a lot of competition. The Prosperity Gospel, Trump's brand, gives people examples of people who prayed and then got rich. Or it suggests some, like Trump, are rich because God favored them.
An astrology calendar or a Tarot card it something anyone can see. They cannot see an invisible god.
When someone says he is "spiritual but not religious" does that also include Tarot cards and astrology? I have no idea. I doubt such a person considers herself an atheist. And, when a parent scolds their adult child who no longer attends church and says, "A person needs to believe in something" are the parents relieved when the adult says Tarot cards?
All we can conclude for certain is that Astrology and Tarot cards are big and getting bigger.
