Calls for Kicking Out Gay Catholic Clergy



A conservative Catholic columnist is calling for the next Pope to rid the Catholic hierarchy of "The Lavender Mafia." This is about a conspiracy theory that a large number of gay priests are promoting each other and moving into powerful positions to further the Catholic "gay agenda." The author acknowledges there are celebrate gay clergy who are not part of this perceived power struggle. He has decided the latter can stay.

That there is a conspiracy, both inside the Vatican or in society at large, has been promoted since forever by gay-hating Christians. The conspiracy claims gay men are trying to court straight young men and make them gay. Also, it is claimed there is an effort to make gay "normal" and gay people given the same rights as straight people which the right says would be a sin.

What is amusing with the effort to eliminate all gay men who practice gay sex from the Catholic clergy is how they will be found, tried and convicted. The church acknowledges children of priests and has rules about their obligations for child support. It has been unable to prevent priests from fathering children while claiming to be celibate. How will if find gay priests having affairs, especially when there are no pregnancies?

The Catholic church is full of fantasies. One is eliminating all abortions. Another is eliminating the sin of birth control. Add the sin of masturbation. Finding and eliminating gay clergy is just another in a long line of silly preoccupations with sin and control of people's lives.

Ancient God, Bel (Baal), the Main Character in an Ancient Play

In a British museum is a preserved stone tablet from Babylon. It dates to about 2,000 BCE. Someone labored patiently to inscribe an entire passion play featuring the god Bel. I reiterate this is a stone tablet, not a recopied papyrus. The play begins with the god Bel arrested by soldiers and taken off the stage. He reappears at a trial in the Hall of Judgement. Bel is innocent but is sentenced to death. In the next scene Bel is accosted by a mob. He is despised and rejected. The actor playing Bel is then taken by guard to a hilltop in a sacred grove. Two criminals are taken with him. One of these is released. The the audience then leaves the theater and follows the actor Bel and his guards to the top of a hill where the death scene is enacted by hanging from a tree. Who Suffers from a "Hardened Heart"

Some years ago on this blog there was a discussion about what the Bible calls "The hardened heart." The "hardened heart" was the explanation given for why people like me cannot accept the tenets of Christianity. We are unable to believe there are floating spirits and gods or imaginary places people go when the die. Now, a prominent Christian preacher and author has given us a way to diagnose the "hardened heart." It contained some surprises.  Rev. John Piper, who spoke about the hardened heart, said we can see this in a person who lacks "ordinary tenderness and compassion." He went on to describe the characteristics of a person without the affliction of the hardened heart. A healthy person displays empathy and sympathy. Those with the hardened heart are like stone.
