When Religion Dictates Medicine, Here's What Happens
Finally, charges were dropped against a young woman in Georgia who had a miscarriage and disposed of the fetus. The District Attorney advised police not to arrest her in the first place but for whatever reason they did so anyway. The DA eventually dropped all charges.
This practice, local anti-abortion sheriffs and police chiefs deciding what state and federal laws mean and arresting local women they don't like, has been going on since Trump's first term. A woman miscarries and the locals make up scenarios and file charges. It's a product of legislators who know nothing about medicine passing laws and giving religious local officials a green light to run their area from the Bible. I recall about a dozen cases similar to the one in the link.
I've discussed here many times before the similarity between prohibition and abortion. It was possible to manufacture and sell alcoholic drinks undetached. Whiskey was distilled where there was no light except the moon, thus the name "moonshine." On top of that whiskey and beer were manufactured in Canada and came across the border in automobile radiators and car with whiskey tanks where the back seat used to be. The Canadian city of Winsor is right across the border from Detroit. Al Capone brought it from that area to Chicago where law enforcement had more important things to watch. Bars openly sold beer and whiskey.
As with abortion today, there were places where local elected sheriffs remained popular by arresting those breaking the law. This was especially found in the rural South. The link above took place in Georgia. Most of the worst state laws against abortion are in the Bible Belt today.
Local Christian sheriffs will, no doubt, continue to claim they know medicine. As they do this, women and sources of abortion medicine and services will just go further underground.
