Who Has the Lowest Moral Standards. Hollywood or Christianity?
David French, who writes about religion and politics in the New York Times, posted a great article today about the "Me Too" movement. The "Me Too" movement was about women who heard of male celebrity sex abuse and stood up to say it happened to "Me Too." Now the "Me Too" has shown up in churches and in huge denominations like the Catholic Church and Southern Baptist Convention. "Me Too" has become "Church Too."
I can't count the number of times Catholics on this site have complained about me singling out that denomination for criticism about child and adult sexual abuse. It's everywhere, they point out correctly, why pick on us? That it's everywhere, including in the Catholic and Southern Baptist Convention, is exactly my point. Why should the country look to the Christian faith for "moral guidance" if it is no better than any other part of society?
Accusing "Hollywood" of causing moral decay has become even more ridiculous when we see the next President of the United States paying hush money for sex and his cast of characters who are known for all manner of moral questions. Trump's appointees may not be much worse than society in general but they certainly no worse than "Hollywood."
I always recall the prominent Republican, Bill Bennet, who said when Clinton had oral sex with Monica, "Stop it Mr. President. We're trying to raise kids out here." The Trump people are no help either.
It seems to me so-called moral standards have always been the responsibility of each person. We have not nor will we ever receive "help" from Hollywood, politicians, churches or the clergy. There can be no doubt this is creeping into the collective mind of the general public as it leaves the church behind.
