Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and President Kamala


Fox News and Christian Post are the only two news outlets publishing a picture taken some years back of Kamala Harris and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The Sisters are men who perform in drag and include ridicule of Jesus on the Cross among other parodies on religion. My unexpert opinion is Harris is going to be our next President. Not only will she be breaking new ground by being the first female, she will be the first president who is on record as enjoying hanging out with men in drag. The picture is now being used in anti-Harris ads.

Using this picture in the campaign against Harris certainly will please the religious right. I think, however, it will ultimately be good for her. The message I get from it is Harris is someone who enjoys her life. She is a person who accepts all kinds of people, even those different from most others. All of us feel a little different and she would accept each of us. On top of that, many thousands of parents took their children to the local library to hear men in drag read stories and they will be Harris voters. 

No matter the "sinfulness" of Donald Trump, his campaign circle includes people who want sin front and center in the campaign. Are they saying, "Yes, he is sinful. But we can rely on him to pass laws against sin because he knows it so well"? 

Men entertaining other men and women by dressing as women has an enduring appeal. It was referred to in the Bible as a ritual the victors imposed on the vanquished. It was performed hundreds of years ago in Shakespearian period theater. Its fans remain and they will vote for Harris.

Religious Freedom Arguments Ultimately Will Fail

We are very early in the period of arguments about religious freedom. When every person can have her own god how can the rest of society accommodate all of them? While courts have often dismissed arguments other than the religious liberty of those opposed to abortion and gays, the argument is being used more often these days by liberals. Recently a doctor who provided water and food for migrants crossing the border illegally quoted scripture as justification for what he was doing. Back in the day, a similar argument was used by anti war advocates who burned draft cards. Everyone knows the list of passages in the Bible advocating peace is as long as your arm. As the flag waving political right Christians carry on about their religious freedom, they have little to no interest in that of others. Super Bowl Time is Christian Testimony Time

Every year just before the Super Bowl there are press releases about players who are Christians. I don't know if the players themselves bring up the topic or if reporters/writers ask about their religion so the writers can fill some inches in the Christain media. I think most of the time it is the latter. What players had to say in the link is not all that obnoxious, they did not say "God wants me to win the Super Bowl." If the 200 or so players who suite up for both teams this Sunday represent a cross section of U.S. society, a slight majority would say they "believe in God."
