States Rights on Abortion; States Cheat
Governor DeSantis is Forced Birth crazy. He knows full well the polls that show a petition measure that will put abortion rights on a state-wide ballot is polling near the 60% margin needed for approval. The only way to win is to use state funds and state employees to bend events and maybe tie the measure up in the courts. That is, to use every means at his disposal to prevent the public from voting on this.
He created a fake department with a name like "Election Integrity." It has a million $ budget and its staff has fanned off around the state with copies of the petition with the names and addresses of signees. These state employees are knocking on doors asking people if they remember actually signing their names, perhaps challenging the handwriting. One assumes they will find a handful of people who want their names off or can't remember signing and DeSantis will go to court trying to stop the vote.
He is also using taxpayer funds to pay for ads urging a no vote on the measure. The ads contain false or misleading information and ACLU and other groups are in court trying to stop the publicly funded lying.
We can all recall that after the Florida legislature passed a draconian Forced Birth bill when DeSantis was running for President. Suddenly he was afraid to be photographed signing the bill into law. He signed it at midnight with no press present.
While "State's Rights" on many issues has merit, it needs state governments run by honest and open politicians. DeSantis is not one of these. He is at the other end of the spectrum. We can count on some other states using similar tactics to prevent voters from choosing the rights of "one cell is a human being" over the rights of pregnant women.
For many years, the similarity between Forced Birth and Prohibition of alcohol has been obvious. Prohibition was put into place following years of news stores about drunk husbands, employees and friends. The solution, it was preached was to put a stop to this national disease. How the prohibition would be enforced was never seriously discussed. To a majority of people, the logical solution to the "problem" was prohibition, That held sway until it was actually passed. Then people said, "Wait a minute. That was not supposed to apply to me." It took as lot of deaths by gunshots and liquor loaded vehicles to overturn the prohibition. Is this sounding familiar?
If DeSantis is successful in his underhanded effort to prevent a vote, time will bring abortion rights to Florida.
