Pro Life Does Not Have to Kill Women

New York Times columnist David French is a prolife attorney. Yet, he sees the dilemma of the Forced Birth operation. He notes nearly all Forced Birth operatives support rights to carry guns. In addition, they support the right of someone to shoot to kill if the person has reason to believe his/her home is being broken into. "Stand your ground" rights mean you can kill a person if you believe that person was about to harm you. Abortion abolitionists, French says, do not believe a woman has the right to kill her fetus if the fetus is about to kill her. The only interpretation of this is the fetus should kill the mother whenever it is one or the other.

I'm well aware of a line Forced Birthers use often. It goes something like this, "Oh, we support the lives of both the woman and the fetus. So, we're making a huge concession. An abortion can happen to save the life of the mother." Then they, or their judges who want women forced to give birth, put is rules about what "to save the life of the mother" mean. When the mother is faced with a potential loss of life the birth must go forward. Only when death is imminent can doctors attempt a life-saving abortion in the rules of the so called "right-to-life" cult. It's a cult that values on the fetus.

It took David French several years to deal with this dilemma. He has always said, and continues to say, "The fetus is a human being." But he somehow did not recognize that pasting the label of "human being" on one fertilized cell plays with religious minds in dangerous ways. There are minds that cannot stop themselves from piling value onto the one cell and piling vigilante bitterness on the women who disagree.

The Forced Birth cult believes that because they have drawn a line in the sand which decides when a different human resides in a woman's body we who believe in women's rights must draw one also. Countless times commenters on this blog have demanded of me that I state when I "believe" a different human resides in a woman's body. The fate of the embryo lies within the domain of the woman because the embryo is part of her body.

As French points out, most of the Forced Birth cult endorses gun ownership and the right to kill other humans when certain circumstances prevail. The one with the gun decides which life is going to end, his or that of another. Forced Birth needs to clean up its own logic before badgering woman entering clinics.
