Drag is Coming to Your Church


One of the most wonderful things about living a long time is that one gets to see more good changes. Yes, bad changes also but the good ones bring happiness, almost a sense of accomplishment even though it was due to others. There is gay marriage and atheists can safely walk the streets.

A new one is bringing drag performers into Christian churches. Why would a church want this? Why would a performer want to go there? The explanations by both make perfect sense. If a church welcomes all kinds of people, why not drag performers?  

We know drag performers were invited to public libraries for Saturday children's story hours. Since public money is involved in these community libraries, Bible thumpers frightened local elected people and we don't hear much about this anymore. The battle ground has moved into Christianity itself and right-wing Christians can do nothing about it.

I've been around live theater all of my life. One of the most common things that comes up is the gender and characters to be presented on stage and the gender of actors available. Often, the two do not match up. The most common problem is extra female actors available and a shortage of men for male parts. Women play the male parts. I wonder is state legislators will start learning about this common practice and accuse theater companies of violating God's teaching found in the Bible? Crazier things have happened. 

Two or three decades ago teenagers accepted gender uncertainty without hesitation. They found friends among the gender fluid and thought nothing about it. As time passed they grew into adults and other adults began to see gender uncertainty is not something to get all worked up about. It is simple part of the human family. 

I'm hoping there will be a drag performance in a church near me so I can go and enjoy it.

Religious Freedom Arguments Ultimately Will Fail

We are very early in the period of arguments about religious freedom. When every person can have her own god how can the rest of society accommodate all of them? While courts have often dismissed arguments other than the religious liberty of those opposed to abortion and gays, the argument is being used more often these days by liberals. Recently a doctor who provided water and food for migrants crossing the border illegally quoted scripture as justification for what he was doing. Back in the day, a similar argument was used by anti war advocates who burned draft cards. Everyone knows the list of passages in the Bible advocating peace is as long as your arm. A Split in Anti Abortion: Christians Who Want to Help Women

There are a couple of facts we all must face in the politics of abortion. One (A.) is that anti abortion politics are driven as much by the desire to punish women as it is about so called "life." The other (B.)is many decisions to get abortions have a large economic component. Many women terminate a pregnancy because giving birth present what they see as economic setbacks that are intolerable. A Christian group has decided it should focus on (B.) instead of (A.). This is going to anger those whose main focus is sin and the punishment of women who sin by having sex.
