Trump Decides Abortion is not a Big Deal

Trump has been saying he will announce his position on abortion and both sides will find it "beautiful." He said his decision would come after a meeting of the two sides where they would come to a compromise and this would be his position. Today we learned of his beautiful position. It is for some states to have very liberal access to abortion and other states to ban it. As any rational observer of abortion politics would have predicted, all sides have now people very mad at Trump.

Readers here know that if abortion is murder there is no logic to permitting states to decide its legality. If it is not murder, there is no reason for any state to pass laws that restrict it. Either there is a line in the sand or there is no line.

I don't know where Biden was on abortion during the Obama years. Did he understand he would have to come down 100% on side or the other? Bernie Sanders did not understand. When he was competing with Hillary for the nomination he often said that if President he would crisscross the country and persuade people his liberal views on social policy, including abortion I assumed, were correct and they would come to see things as he saw them. Hillary just shook her head at such naive thinking. She said liberals have to take whatever small victories they can get, circle the wagons and fight off those coming to take back these laws and policies. Hillary was right. State by state abortion rights people are fighting for rights and winning. After each victory, Forced Birth operatives will be trying to undo abortion rights.

Trump's mistake was signally to Forced Birth voters that he favored a national ban on abortion. He should have said while President, "Look, some states will keep abortion available. Women will travel from anti abortion states to abortion rights states. That's what they did before Roe, that's what they will do after Roe. I will not go beyond leaving it up the states." Forced Birth voters would still have supported him because they had burned their bridges and had nowhere else to go. Now they have to decide to either vote for Trump and state's rights on abortion or not vote at all.

Forced Birth was doing fairly well before Trump. Each year laws with new absurd requirements were being added to abortions. It was listening to a "heartbeat", looking at an ultrasound, waiting three days and on and on. Each absurd requirement made women miss more work and made clinics charge more for abortions. They could have kept doing this for years to come. Maybe they would have passed laws requiring women who want abortions to read the entire Bible and pass a test.

That Trump cannot find a way out of the hole he dug for himself is amusing to say the least.
