People Have Been Challenging Assigned Genders Since Forever

A Christan site recently carried a declaration of war against liberal thinking, especially against any recognition or celebration of trans people. The link author treats the random happenstance of trans day falling on Easter Sunday as a major insult to Christians. So much is being made of this.

I'm reading a book by a trans woman who was a man until the age of 60. She reviews her entire life as a man who, in his/her mind, was a woman. Having known several people who transitioned, I know there are many different stories and experiences. In every case there is one thing similar, weighing the dire consequences in their personal and professional lives of going forward with a change in gender identity. It is never done lightly. The book is, I Heard Her Call My Name, by Lucy Stante.

It's apparent humans have been doing gender transition since there have been humans. Native Americans celebrated the non-gendered people in their midst as having "Two Spirits." People with Two Spirits were thought to have qualities and abilities not found in the single gendered population.

The Bible itself refers to the presence of effeminate males. Whoever wrote the Bible knew such men existed. Also condemned are women who wear men's clothing. The latter may have been to result of seeing or knowing women who had transitioned. Whatever the reason for these references in the Bible, the truth is someone knew there were trans people around back then.

Surely, everyone knows there are babies born with physical traits of both male and female. These babies are gender nonspecific.

All of this makes mockery of the claim made by some Christians, "God made only males and females." If there is a God, and this God made the universe including humans, he/she made some trans people. The statement he made only males and females is false.

I would wager that every single sermon and article in the Christian press lambasting Biden's distant fingerprints of the trans visible day which fell on Easter came from a Trump supporting source. None came from people who had recognized that trans is everywhere and always has been.

  1. OMG. This year Easter fell on The Transgender Day of Visibility. Some Christians are absolutely incensed by the "juxtaposition".

Try this juxtaposition. Celebrate the death of a rabbi on the Muslim sabbath, shop the super duper sales on the Jewish sabbath, rejoice at the rabbi’s resuscitation on the Christian sabbath, All Fools’ Day.

“The Bible itself refers to the presence of effeminate males.”

I am reminded of the castrati of the RCC in service around the Vatican back in the day. Their maturing bodies sporting secondary female sex characteristics. Some parents made choices for the well being of their children then as now. What’s the beef?

Perhaps it would be OK with current Catholic pundits to add these poor guys to the list of those celebrated on Easter Sunday. (my sarcasm is in full bloom :) )
