Has Anyone Here Watched the TV Jesus


When TV is discussed on written pages it is a foreign world to me. I'm not proud of my TV diet or critical of others who spend more time there, it just evaporated with me in old age. So it was amusing to learn of a quite successful TV series that is about religion. It is called The Chosen.

The Chosen apparently centers on Jesus and his life with those around him including his disciples. The Catholic link writer takes to task the series. He laments its popularity. Why would a good Catholic lament a popular TV series where people learn about Jesus?

He hates it because it is about the WRONG JESUS. Who is the right Jesus? I'm not sure I really understand but it is not a "regular guy" Jesus. It is not the "bro Jesus" on The Chosen or in other places. Apparently the "proper" Jesus is taught about in the Catholic Church and it is not to be replaced with some other version.

The Chosen is written by Protestants and came from some branch that likes the bro Jesus. The link writer, however, is having a cow because the audience now includes many thousands of Catholics. These Catholics are on social media telling other Catholics how much they enjoy bro Jesus. But now some fans have differences even in how bro Jesus should be perceived.

One person was referred to by the link writer. This young Catholic woman had told here old school mother about the TV program. Her mother watched it and liked it so much she told her daughter about the stories and said it was great to learn this history. The daughter, however, was alarmed that her mother was not discerning between the obvious fictionalized aspect of the stories and those more grounded in the Bible. 

I would advise, "Let the hairsplitting about nothing continue. It's been going on since day one." First we have the bro Jesus separated from some other Jesus. Then, apparently, there are various versions of bro Jesus. We have a list of Protestant denominations as long as your arm and now clusters or subgroups of churches forming constantly. Among Catholics apparently there are thousands of bro Jesus fans while the home office owns another Jesus. 

Maybe someone will start a TV series called The Jesus Wars.

The Religious Capitol Invaders May Yet Win

So much about U.S. society and religion can be learned from the Civil War and what happened afterwards. After its defeat, the South started a myth about the unethical soldiers from the North. The South fought for principles of God and states rights. The North did not. It was the South, this propaganda told the country, that had the high moral ground.  The Capitol invaders, encouraged by Trump, swallowed the myth that Biden's election was stolen. Thus, they think they held and still hold the high moral ground. This was reinforced by the cross and prayers during the invasion. Father Frank Pavone, the Ultimate Crook

Recently, the Vatican defrocked Frank Pavone. His diehard fans are outraged. This is because he cleverly manipulated his fans and the press all the while living well from donations and, apparently, abusing some women. By making abortion the "sin" of the century, and himself the main opposition to this one sin, he himself could get away with any sin he pleased.  As the link points out, Pavone was the perfect priest for the Trump era. Trump is so self-important laws have no role in his life. He felt accountable to no one. Women were there to be had. Pavone and Trump are interchangeable.  Pavone was very successful raising money. In his mind, abortion was so important in Catholic beliefs and he was so important in anti-abortion the money he raised opposing it was his to do with what he liked.
