Fuller Seminary, Talk Diversity, Fire Anyone Who Supports Diversity

The Fuller Theological Seminary is located in conservative Southern California. One would not expect it to be liberal but it's California. You would not expect it to be like Mississippi.

It markets itself as a place open to discussion of contrary views. But, it retains a policy of requiring a pledge of opposition to LGBT+ sexual practices. A student leader who was put on the Seminary payroll to supervise and administer needs of the Senior class was told every employee must sign the anti LGBT pledge. She did not agree with Fuller's requirement. Furthermore, she had already accepted a job offer from a more liberal denomination. Signing the pledge would have not only violated her conscience but been at odds with her new employer. She reasoned that because Fuller advertised itself as a place where different views could coexist, she could negotiate not signing. She was fired

I've noticed variations of Fuller's political behavior across the board by right wing Christianity. The Pope wants no one to speak of homosexual sin and allows priests to issue a limited blessing. Probably it's not an option for the billion-member church to completely change direction but it is an option to leave unworkable and outdated notions behind and talk up new ones. Ex President Trump cautions supporters to not talk of a national ban of abortions. Others stress the need to talk of a woman's plight in an unwanted pregnancy but are careful not to offer a way out.

If the Pope's position is considered "confusing" one could say the same about Fuller. It allows a gay student group to hold meetings on campus. The official campus position is that different views between students and faculty are permitted. It states it does not discriminate against student or employee applicants for their sexual orientation. It does demand agreement certain sexual acts are sinful. Employees are required to sign their agreement. As I understand the student would not sign agreement to this.

One could imagine the student thinking, gosh, different opinions are allowed. LGBT students are allowed. How could it be a big deal that a lowly undergraduate student on a part time salary will not sign off on this ridiculous view?

The naive student did not understand big donors to Fuller would not tolerate her views, fired. She learned one of life's painful lessons.
