The Catholic Case Against Birth Control is a Joke

Catholic clergy recognized long ago that to keep Catholic numbers up there needed to be lots of Catholic babies. But, how could they hide this self-centered reason for opposing birth control. They had to come up with something else. What they came up with is ridiculous, that birth control somehow demeans women.

It is ironic the clergy, who demean women from their ranks as not capable, would point to something that gives women independence and control over their lives to justify their own control obsession. Children in public schools today are taught critical thinking. All religious groups should be trying to prevent the words "critical thinking" and any teaching about it. The obsession of some with race, class and history is misplaced. Critical thinking is helping to cause Christian numbers to fall.

Critical thinking would ask, "Why are Catholic clergy leaders really opposed to birth control?" When the argument of "demeaning women" was presented the next question would be "What does that term mean?" and "Could that mean declaring that women are lesser than men?" This would be followed by "Why might the male Catholic hierarchy hold this view?"

Controlling the size of one's family by abortion is in a way birth control, though much inferior to the cheaper ones that prevent pregnancies altogether. Here critical thinking plays a part also. The question asked is how is it proven scientifically that one fertilized egg is a "human being." There have been many answers test marketed to this one but never a winner.

From what I read, new Christian pundits are added every day to the already long list who are trying to find and answer to the falling church membership, attendance and political influence. I don't see any Christians realizing that ridiculous arguments turn people away from the faith. Yet, this seems like the elephant in the room. Cases for the faith's tenets that might have survived attack years ago no longer are defensible. While the task of defending the faith is necessary for those who depend on it for their livelihood a new more rational approach is needed.

Toward the end I would offer some help. When asked why are Catholic women not use birth control, don't answer "because it demeans women." This is a demeaning and self serving answer. A better answer would be, "It is our tradition. More conversations are needed about what the rule on this should be today."
