"THINK BIG AMERICA": A New Abortion Rights Political Group
Most abortion rights groups are affiliated with the hands-on work of funding and providing abortions. We all know about Planned Parenthood and a few others. The new group has at the helm the male Governor of Illinois. He comes from a family of long-standing abortion rights advocacy.
Think Big America is focusing on politics, not raising money for women to get abortions. Hopefully, it will have enough money to make grants to abortion rights candidates at all levels of politics, local to national.
From the brief link article, my impression is this group represents the center and power of the Democratic Party. We've seen a bit of this already. When Biden/Harris went further than expected in support of women seeking abortion it surprised some, including myself. I never found working in the Party especially rewarding. It is filled with many different groups advocating different things. Labor Unions are big. Teacher are big but they are a separate group from labor unions. Many are passionate about health care, especially for lower income people. There are environmentalists. In all states, I suppose, there is competition between rural and urban people and the list goes on.
When social issues come up, they do not fit the agendas of any of these groups. So, they are spoken of only in passing if at all. I found this when I dabbled in state politics way back when trying to get Democrats to push harder for gay rights including gay marriage. Leaders would say, "Oh yeah, I'm all for that" but it was not something they wanted to push or pursue.
This reluctance is why formation of Think Big America is so interesting. It signals, at least as I see it, the other disparate agendas, unions, teachers, environmentalists, etc., see it as a way to elect candidates that in turn will be friendly to their cause.
The irony of this is that I found many life-long democrats are not friendly to state-wide referendums. Most states do not have them. Whenever abortion rights has been voted on it has won. This, in turn, is helping Democrats find their sea legs and move forward with something different to offer the public. I would paraphrase their offer as, "Vote for Democrats. We offer a Bible-free opportunity to you regardless of your race or gender." So far it is working.
