The Unspeakable Effect of Climate Change: Starvation
We all know there are areas of the world that experience starvation. Never mentioned is world-wide starvation. World-wide starvation is taboo subject matter. It carries with it religious and political baggage no one wants to touch. Birth rates, income classes and abortion are all in the mix.
Yet, hard data is developing which does not predict world-wide food shortages but illustrates how it could happen. The conditions that would cause it are not out of reach. Former experience in world-wide food production has been that when food production plumets in one area it ramps up in another. Our powerful transportation system moves food to the food-short areas.
Those expressing caution about future food production have compared food growing conditions against the jet stream. The jet stream, as readers know, is a powerful current, sometimes divided into various currents, of air moving from west to east. It moves from areas of higher pressure towards areas of lower pressure. All of the movement of air lift warm moist air higher where it condenses and turns to rain or snow.
A vast amount of food production depends on the jet stream moving over areas where soil is conducive to growing food. Scientists are uncomfortable with trends in the jet stream. It might be moving to the wrong areas and not returning in time to save food production.
Whenever I have discussed potential environmental calamities here my critics have quickly pointed out that other warnings of disaster have not appeared on the schedule predicted. While criticisms of the time variable are justified, many of the dire predictions are here or on their way. Certainly, climate change itself is playing out as predicted.
Food production in the Americas has been very successful. It's hard to imagine widespread shortages when it seems like we have so much food. We even have millions of acres that are idle because of government programs. If we ate less meat there would be additional tons of grain for us to eat. All of this makes hunger seems impossible. So far, however, we have not experienced wide-spread crop failures. As production as grown so has the population of the world. If we had entire continents with crop failures we could expect border crossings. In spite of our affluence, I think our environment may humble us yet.
just dropped by this child's garden of misinformation/leftist hysteria to remind you that you once wrote the Billy Graham once said that indivual human life began at birth. seems that you were wrong: seems that he said, rather, that abortion was an evil thing. do you have any response? as to climate change and starvation, thank you Dr. Erhlich. btw, you don't seem to be getting many comments lately; PERHAPS YOUR READERS ARE GETTING BORED.
ReplyDelete"he said, rather, that abortion was an evil thing. Do you have a response?"
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. As to Billy Graham, why would he say abortion is an evil thing? The only people who think abortion is "evil" are those who have the religious beliefs the fetus is a human being. If he had some other reason please provide it.
perhaps he didn't think, after all, that human life begins at birth. and perhaps, just perhaps. it's only idiots like you who think otherwise.
DeleteAnonymous "perhaps he didn't think...that human life begins at birth..."
DeleteI'm trying to follow your line of thinking here, but it's difficult. You now seem to be agreeing with me that he believes the human life begins at conception. Earlier you seemed to be disagreeing.
you said, once upon a time, that old Billy said that life begins at birth. I didn't say it and I surely don't hold any such view. I am merely pointing out that YOUR assertion, as it pertains to Billy appears, to have been dead wrong. get it now?
DeleteAnonymous--When the Roe decision came down to legalize abortion Billy Graham was quoted as saying it was "an answer to our prayers." That is, he ENDORSED the Supreme Court's decision which established abortion rights. I believe he was instrumental in starting "Christianity Today" which endorsed abortion rights in the late 60's and early 70's.
DeleteSome years later he was against abortion. However, when some of the chest beaters against abortion wanted him to join in public appearances and public denunciations of abortion. He refused to participate. If you want to read more about his views on abortion here is a link.

did you ever bother to correct or retract your story. as far as I know you never did. BTW did you ever think about Billy's reason for his apparent 180 degree turn?
