Where Can LGBTQ Elders find Eldercare

When a lesbian couple reached 80 years they decided they needed more care than they could handle themselves. They had lived for decades in an area of Michigan and had a circle of other aging friends. When they began inquiring about assisted living in their community and near their friends the facilities would not promise good attitudes by either other residents or staff. They could not guarantee the couple could live together just as heterosexual couples live. The couple had to search nationwide and eventually moved 200 miles to a place that met their needs.

This is one of those places one has to ask, "What good is religion?" A least a portion of Christianity preaches "The Good Samaritan," helping the wounded man along the road who is of a different ethnic background. There are hundreds of denomination sponsored assisted living and nursing homes. I suppose many are arranged so couples can live together until one of them needs bedside care. How many will welcome, along with other residents, a gay couple? Forget the Good Samaritan.

This practice of condemnation and hatred comes through on so many issues. The current one is "trans." State Legislatures across the country have passed recently laws prohibiting children who find themselves a different gender than what they were assigned at birth from using rest rooms of their gender. Apparently, girls wearing girl clothing are expected to enter only the boy's rest rooms. The Good Samaritan does not apply here either.

One has to acknowledge the public relations, the propaganda, of the Christian faith has been at least somewhat successful. It has portrayed itself as about "loving" its neighbors. Reality is something else entirely. Reality is the hatred of women who get abortions and trans children. For all its "Jesus Loves You" preaching and singing a different reality has become apparent.

One would hope in a generation or so it will be possible for elderly gay couples to find homes and acceptance at any and every assisted living facility, religious or secular. Until then, our society must endure the inhospitable nature of Christianity and hope it and its influence continues to fade away.
