Steve Bannon Tells Priests for Life it is a Drag on Republicans

Political celeb Steve Bannon has a podcast and invited the defrocked priest, Steve Pavone, head of Priests for Life, to come on and talk about the fiasco for right to life in Ohio. Right to life lost big there a couple of days ago. Bannon warned Pavone right to life "had better get organized because right now it is a drag on us." He warned that big donors would go elsewhere.

They both have problems. Pavone was defrocked because he used his fund-raising muscle against his Catholic Church. Bannon has a problem because he thinks it Pavone's fault Republicans are in a pickle. The Party is in a pickle because it invited right-to-life into the festivities and they dropped a turd into the punch bowl. It would have been better if Republicans had asked, "How will we get votes from people after we took away their rights?"

Bannon said right to life needed to be "better organized." Organization will not change anything. Republicans need to become the limited government party again. They need to advocate that women, not the government, should decide about ending a pregnancy. Let the finger pointing begin.

Republicans today remind me of the patients some doctors see. I'm reading a book by a heart doctor who sees patients who drink, smoke and eat too much and have bad hearts. They want some solution other than changing their health habits. Republicans like Bannon want hang on to their politically unpopular opposition to abortion but want Pavone to fix the bad elections that result. I suppose to Pavone Republicans losing elections is not as important as harassing women. A few Republican losses are a small price to pay for the joy of seeing women distraught and troubled.

Today I went to the Iowa State Fair, about 20 minutes from where I live, to hear ND Gov. Doug Bergum, running for President, give a campaign talk. While waiting for the event to start a young man sat down beside me and we chatted. He worked for Trump and was there, apparently, to observe and evaluate Doug. He let me know how terrible Biden is. I explained that Trump is going to lose Ohio because of the abortion issue. He listened and finally said, "I hope you are wrong about that." He could not argue--no matter how many mistakes Biden makes abortion rights will reelect him. Republicans cannot really right their ship because it has become a religion, not a political party.
