Jesus Killed the GOP

Recollections fill an old guy's brain. One is a beautiful young woman from the South. It was the early 1960's. Racial integration was a fire ball of controversy. President Kennedy and later Johnson led the charge for racial equality. The young woman asked the other students, "Doesn't Kennedy realize he and the Democrats just lost the entire South?" They did. Now they are winning it back.

Another was Senator Bob Dole a few years later. Southern states were rapidly switching from the prejudice of old Democratic Party to the new prejudice of the Republican Party. Dole said, "We Republicans welcome people of all persuasions into our Party." He should have understood why the founding fathers did not allow government to embrace a religion. They the froth and ferment of religion pushes everyone else out of the room. Those Dole invited in took over the room and pushed everyone else out. The most recent Republican Platform (no platform was adopted in 2020) reeked with religion.

We know predicting elections is an uncertain game but at this time the year 2024 looks great for Biden and Democrats across the board. The troubles laid at the doorstep of the GOP came directly from Christianity. Trump used the Christian idea that abortion is murder to justify appointing likeminded Judges. These Christian judges overturned Roe and now we can place the blame for GOP losses at the door of the faith.

I can understand many Republican unhappy with the church called the Republican Party but don't want to vote for a Democrat. But, if they think they are going to change the Republican Party by staying and fighting I don't see a future for them. They might be better off becoming Democrats and trying to change that party from the inside. If they did the latter they would not be fighting against Jesus.

Perhaps there always have been zealous people demanding the behavior of others conform to their own. Prohibition was like that. Rosevelt was elected and was one of the first to toast with a beer when it fell. Maybe there is a lesson for Republicans there.

So far, failure at the polls has not brought about clear thinking among Republican or Christian leaders. Anti-abortion zealots say they are doubling down and trying to enlist even more extreme candidates and initiated measures. If there is no reward in the afterlife for them they will have lost twice.

  1. Jesus is too “woke” for some Christians. Maybe they fear awaking from their “dogmatic slumber”. An evolution in their humanity. Rather continue casting imprecations on others driven by the machinations of charlatans in the name of their faith. Better to turn their backs on an incarnation of their deity in favor of an orange Julius Caesar with bad feet. The GOP has critically wounded Christianity. It’s bleeding out.
