Republicans Put Boulders Their Own Victory Lane

Republican leaders do parody of themselves so naturally they don't seem to realize they are doing it. We can see many of them just now preparing to blame Trump for the coming loss in 2024. "If only he would drop out," many are hinting, "We could advance a more popular candidate and beat Biden."

Trump is not their biggest problem. Their problem is the drift into religion and not counting votes. "We hate you sinners," is the message The sinners are women and men who support women's rights. By turning away this large constituency they have kissed the Presidency goodbye.

A politician in Nevada who worked for Trump is now supporting DeSantis. He thinks that, even though Trump lost Nevada twice, the margin was close and with effort the Party can garner the votes to win. I wonder what voters he thinks can be stolen from Democrats and taken to the Republican side? Is it all those women and men supporters who are voting for Dems across the country because of anti-abortion Republicans? Now, that's funny.

Anti-abortion and anti-gay have delivered the Presidency into the hands of their Republican's enemy, Biden. They can try to hide abortion under the cover of darkness, as DeSantis did, not talk about it or hold up a Bible in front of a church. None of these changes the basic math.

Everyone who follows politics knows there is something call "hot button issues." These are issues that both touch emotions and are easy to understand. Republicans, usually, are better and finding these issues than Democrats. The worst thing is when either party thinks they have found one and it turns out to be the wrong button. Republicans thought they had one with Clinton's sexual misadventures. Now, Democrats may think they have one with Trump getting indicted for breaking laws in several ways. Trump's crimes ultimately will not be perfect hot button issues. All the crooked things Trump did require at least a little study and, in the end, did not hurt the average person in some way that affects them today or tomorrow.

Democrats were handed a hot-button issue by Republicans. It was the repeal of Roe v Wade. Fireworks went off immediately and are still firing. In 2022 Democrats talked almost exclusively about this and scored upsets. They will do the same thing in 2024. Making abortions harder to get means badly needed days of pay. It means having a baby from a man you have learned to hate. It means losing control of your life you can barely hang on to now.

Religious Republicans like the Governor here in Iowa still think the "hot button" is calling the fetus a "baby." This is like trying to tell Trump fans his dalliances have some effect on them personally. The "baby" troupe is something abstract and not a loss like losing three days of pay.

The lane to a Republican victory is still there. The party needs to remove the boulders they put in their way.
