Trump Says DeSantis Anti Abortion is "Too Harsh"

It was as predictable as the sun coming up. The majority of women will not stand for banning abortion. A sizable part of Republican voters are demanding abortion be abolished nationwide. Both DeSantis and Trump know they should not be known as "ban-all-abortions-nationwide" candidates. Trump, for all his faults, had the where-with-all to say this in broad daylight. DeSantis tried to hide this view by signing a bill that would end nearly all abortion in Florida in the dead of the night.

Trump signaled his support of letting states decide and appointed Supreme Court Judges who overturned Roe. However, he made a problem for himself. By appointing these judges, he created the impression he is anti-abortion. To be anti-abortion is to believe abortion is murder. If it is murder, it must be banned nationwide. To say states should decide abortion or no abortion is not really anti-abortion. It is, instead, straddling the issue. To say it is ok for abortion to be available in some states is to say that what we normally consider First Degree Murder is ok in some states.

Perhaps DeSantis thought he could tell those who want abortion banned nationwide that he is with them because he signed a bill in Florida essentially banning abortion. Then, he schemed, I'll tell women who want abortion available the bill got signed somehow late at night when he was sleeping. These are two politicians in the clown car of those running for the Republican nomination.

I'll say this for anti-abortion operatives. They created an image of themselves that appears much bigger than it is. They built a corral labeled "anti-abortion", rounded up all the Republican candidates for President and drove them in. The corral gate was locked and no one can get out.

All this time, there were Democrats who could have seen the issue in the same way. Joe Biden voted against abortion rights when he supported the Hyde Amendment. How did he see there was no political future for himself be pledging to be the President who would overturn Roe when Trump thought that was political genius? It was because Trump has no ability whatsoever to see the long game or play it. He should have seen that by pledging to appoint dufus judges he would be create the impression he wanted abortion banned nationwide.

Many, including many Republicans, see anti-abortion as a drag on the success of the Republican Party. That was the case in the 2022 elections. What it holds for 2024 we will soon see.
