Abortions in Fargo, ND, and Moorhead, MN

I've been wondering if the women's clinic in Fargo has been receiving patients from Texas and Mississippi. Today I received a report on the clinic that was in Fargo when I was Mayor but moved a year ago ten minutes to the east in Moorhead, MN. There was also an interview with the manager of the clinic in Duluth, MN. Duluth, of course, is another "out of the way place" like Fargo-Moorhead.

I sent some money to the Fargo clinic a year or so ago to help defer the costs of moving. I had never heard the story about the financing of the move. Tammy, the wonderful owner and manager of the clinic, said in the link the only workable property they could find in Moorhead was beyond her reach financially. Ultimately, she had to buy it but did not know how she would pay for it. Out of the blue, a supporter offered to start a GO-FUND-ME and to Tammy's amazement it quickly raised one million dollars. If ever there was an example of resolve and support for abortion rights, that was it.

Tammy said in the article the Moorhead clinic continues to have "a hand full" of patients from Texas. Mostly, patients come from ND and western MN where they came from while it was still in Fargo. The new facility is much better isolated from the zealots who harass patients.

The clinic in Duluth says its patient load has increased by 25%. This has come, the manager says, from patients in the Twin Cities who cannot schedule appointments there. The numbers are up in the Twin Cities because of new patient numbers from Texas. Statewide in MN the increase in abortions apparently about 25%.

This information makes me believe to current estimate that abortions in states where it has been basically banned have decreased only by six percent. This six percent does not take into account the increase in medically induced abortions which are not all recorded. A clearer picture of the effect of abortion bans will be available when birth numbers are published. If large numbers of pregnant women are not getting abortions birth numbers should skyrocket.

Evidence shows the numbers of abortions back when abortions were not legal in many states, before the Roe decision making abortion legal in all states, were just as frequent as they later when abortion became legal.
