Anti Abortion Promotes the Life of Fetus, Death of Women

It's a pleasure to find writers that want to probe into questions about life and death and see perspective in a broad sense. When they are found, they almost always skewer the label anti-abortion uses for itself, "pro life." When it uses government to force women to give birth, some die because of it. There is no way to deny this fact.

It borders on the impossible, however, for the forced birth faction of politics to admit this inconsistency. This is because the entire house of cards called Christianity is constructed around a you-will-never-die marketing gambit. Save your soul, you go to heaven and are never dead. Die condemned to hell, you never die there either. Jesus (and various other mythological events) was raised from the dead--death is not part of the Christian faith.

I remember watching a debate between two professors of religion about the historical accuracy of the Bible. One was mostly a believer and the other a skeptic. After they had offered arguments and counter arguments the believer summed up his position. "The Christian faith can never, I mean never, accept that the Resurrection story is a myth. It is imperative Jesus prevailed over death." That summarizes the long standing schtick of Christianity.

When anti-abortion politics was picked up by the faith, the faith had to talk life, life and more life. The "political party" was called "pro life." It is impossible to acknowledge the truth, giving birth threatens the woman more than does an abortion. Acknowledging this fact would poke a hole in the entire "life always and forever" marketing message.

One would think anti-abortion political strategists would support the health of pregnant women. It is well known that better medical care reduces deaths in childbirth. Low-income women have more deaths than higher income women. While there are "pregnancy centers" funded by religious groups, this has done little or nothing to change the statistics of death in childbirth. The U.S. has the highest rate among wealthy nations. Doing something about this death rate would require a large government program. Supporting larger government medicine would destroy the "team" of fiscal conservatives supporting religious conservatives and visa versa.

Politics are more important than the lives of women.
