Religious Leaders Lag Behind the General Population on Climate Change

In politics, fog does not always disappear when the sun comes up. Some political agendas keep spreading new fog so it hangs on. Today, far right religious leaders are fogging up our country on purpose.

Polling data shows people who regard themselves as very religious are the group least likely to be concerned about climate change. When you think about it, this makes sense. Action to limit climate change may require limits to population. It may even require a shrinking population. What could damage forced birth politics more than that?

And there is the "heaven" and "second coming" thingies. If life on earth for good Christians will end soon why waste time taking care of earth? Enjoy the good life that comes from pollution. "Others are sinners--not those of us preparing for Jesus' return. The worst sinners are those who doubt and question."

It's ironic what some Christians say about atheists, "Atheists want to continue enjoying their sins. If they are held accountable to God their fun is over." The truth is environmental problems and possible lack of food and water need to be addressed. If they develop as some anticipate they will cause death and destruction. Christian leaders want to continue their comfortable lives and do not want to be held accountable. Their fun may be over in time.

While the deepest Christians show the least amount to interest in environmental problems their Bible instructs them to be "good stewards." What exactly it means to be "good stewards" is not explained precisely. This has left the matter open to selfish exploitation. Some students back at NDSU told professors Native Americans are poor because they defied God's wishes. God wanted them to "develop" their land. When they continued to use it for growing simple crops and hunting God decided to punish them. "Good stewardship of the land" then is covering the earth with concrete.

The reluctance of conservative religious people to embrace efforts to protect the environment is why Christianity is so often referred to as hosting hypocrites.
