The Right Sees Impending Doom From New Ideas

Fire alarms go off in the Christian right when something thought to be sin turns out to be almost universally acceptable. Chicken Little's the "Sky is Falling" is standard operating procedure with that group. Every step in giving minorities equal rights and treating everyone equally is met by panic.

A columnist in the Fargo Forum today said some ancient wise person had "revealed" to her that Satan would attack the family. Somehow, this invisible being, Satan, would bring down the world by bringing down the family. It is obvious to the columnist, and apparently her circle in the Catholic Church, Satan will destroy the family by making gay marriage commonplace. We are supposed to take it for granted that the long ago "revealed" message about Satan destroying the family referred to gay marriage.

Certainly, gay marriage, the sin, is on its way to becoming commonplace. It has been here for about 20 years. It has had no effect on families. When will deterioration of families that we can tie directly to gay marriage become obvious? The answer is never because it has nothing whatsoever to do with straight marriage or divorce. For whatever reason, it fits the right's political agenda of the Sky is Falling.

The newest Sky is Falling alarm siren is people who were identified as on gender at birth but are a different one. Like gay marriage, this has nothing to do with anyone other than the person who is experiencing this. The right thinks children are targeted with doubts as to their individual genders and this is causing doubts. There is no evidence teachers or schools are suggesting to children they can change their genders. There is no evidence that if this was suggested children would be persuaded to do so. There have always been people who do not feel comfortable in the gender they were assigned at birth and change. I personally know many such people. There are a couple of them in my extended family. They cause no harm to anyone else. No one harmed them.

I have had a lifetime of observing the right's condemnation of certain kinds of sin and the inevitable acceptance of these sins as commonplace. It was movies, dancing, card playing and too many others to remember. But nothing was learned by this history. We still face impeding doom from Satan's sins.

  1. Jon, you are threatened by the Catholic Church, perhaps because you are at complete odds with it. Is there one of the Ten Commandments you agree with or are all just wrong?

I'm guessing "Thou shalt not steal" is fine with you. Any others?

    1. Is there one of the Ten Commandments..that is just wrong?"

Yes, the 10th Commandment. It says you shall not covet your neighbor's property. Along with possessions like donkeys are wives. I think it is wrong to imply having several wives is OK and to treat wives as property is also wrong. It led to women who are lesser and cannot be priests. Thank you for asking.

  2. I read the column you mentioned. You know, that’s what happens when you get flashed by ancient wise people. You get lost somewhere between an Enemy of Lie’s game plan and a battle for holiness. Darn those Santos’.

  3. Sorry, but there is a separate commandment for coveting a neighbor's spouse. It is the 9th Commandment. Which do you agree with among the 10 listed below?

    1. I am the LORD your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me.
    2. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
    3. Remember to keep holy the LORD'S Day.
    4. Honor your father and your mother.
    5. You shall not kill.
    6. You shall not commit adultery.
    7. You shall not steal.
    8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
    9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.
    10. You shall not covet your neighbor's goods.

  4. Matt--Fun to have you on the comment board here. You are wrong, ten includes coveting of "wives." Please read for yourself and don't take Catholic sources as valid. (Your criticism itself is funny because they are not numbered in the Bible.)

I disagree with #1. because "I am" is not true. If it were truthful it would say, "I exist only in your mind." It also violates freedom of religion which is an original principle of our country.

I disagree with #2 because it violates our constitution (freedom of speech).
#8 is a joke because it was already violated in #1.

The others are ok but they did not originate with the Jews. They came from previous societies which included both other religions, other gods and atheists.

  5. Not numbered? The TEN Commandments start with one and end with ten.

The Ten Commandments precede the US Constitution by ahundreds of years.

I'm very happy to hear you agree on the majority.

  6. Anonymous "Not numbered: The Ten Commandments start with one and end with ten."

I was not quite correct in my description of how they appear in the Bible. They are listed in an order but not numbered 1-10. In fact, there are 11 of them, so you are not exactly correct either.

The ones not referring to the Jewish God preceded Christianity by centuries, maybe 200,000 years. You are doing stand up comedy by claiming otherwise. "Let's see...all societies before the Jews stole everything from each other and murdered everyone else." (laughter)
