What Will Happen to Abortion Rights in 2023

Both abortion rights and anti-abortion groups were gobsmacked in 2022. We all know abortion rights groups were hit with what was a few years ago unthinkable, overturn of Roe v Wade. Anti-abortion groups, in turn, were hit with abortion numbers that remained stubbornly strong. There is some consensus that abortions dropped by a tiny 6%. This leaves out the likely increase in unreported use of abortions by pills and improved birth control. On top of that bad news for anti-abortion groups were the election results which demonstrated abortion rights can be an appealing political issue. And the link, from an anti-abortion source, points out, anti-abortion political operatives learned to their surprise there is not a reservoir of political support among voters to eliminate abortion.

Having watched Democrats wallow in low budget campaigns for decades, it was surprising a couple of election cycles back how much money liberal politics can raise. It can swamp Republican fund raising. I learned in my time with gay rights groups they can raise a lot of money. So, I've always wondered can abortion rights raise so much money it swamps the opposition?

It is not happening yet, but a surprise is how much money abortion rights has raised. This morning I opened a letter from the group in this state which raises money to help pay for abortions need by low-income women. The letter, of course, was asking for an end of year gift. A sentence in the letter revealed how successful fund raising has been. Formerly, the group subsidized each abortion for a low-income woman with $130. The amount paid is now $700.  Will we see even larger fund-raising success in abortion rights? It seems possible.

Biden still has abortion rights executive orders he can use. His decisive moves to the left have been surprising to me and so far, politically successful. Rights of women, race and gender are all part of the package that Biden brings with him to the left. I would guess how emboldened he is will depend on how much confusion Trump causes over in Republican city.
