All Interpretations of Jewish Law Do Not Condemn Abortion

All of my life I've heard the U. S. is a "Judeo Christian country." Especially when I was a mayor people who disagreed with me would drop that phrase. For example, a prominent local newspaper columnist told me the "Judeo-Christian faith" uniformly condemns homosexuality. It does not.

When it comes to abortion, the "Judeo Christian faith" does not condemn it. Parts of both Christianity and Judaism are on either side. Just like, there is no science that tells us one fertilized cell is a human being. Nor, does the Bible condemn same sex marriages. Enter the "Judeo Christian faith" and you have entered the spin room.

There are many moving parts in any branch of the Christian faith. There are documents approved by governing bodies which lay out in black and white views of religion that have been officially adopted. Name the denomination and, for the most part, there will be large swaths of the actual membership who either don't know its tenets or know them and ignore. I've mentioned here countless times nearly all Catholic couples practice artificial birth control even though it is condemned by officials of the denomination. When church affiliation has been collected from women who have abortions, the majority are Catholic.

One thing really hard for most devout Christians is that what their church's official doctrine happens to be is not important.  It's not important to the majority of those who attend the church nor is it important to anyone of another branch or not affiliated with Christianity. Evidence of that is growth of the "nones", those who say they are not affiliated with any religion. This group is now larger than any denomination of Christianity and much larger than most religions in the U.S.  "Nones" are growing rapidly in other countries as well. The so-called "threat" of Islam or other faiths taking over the globe does not jive with the growing number of "nones" in Islamic countries.

That religion is given as a reason to oppose abortion while it is not uniformly against it does not mean the religious arguments will stop. They are popular politicly and politics has put in place lots of anti- abortion laws.
