The Irony of Judge Samuel Alito

In his opinion overruling Roe, Judge Alito wrote in a rather cocky style indecision about the legality of abortion has languished too long. It is imperative, he wrote, a decision be made once and for all.  His words imply he thinks, or thought, legal abortion would be eventually outlawed across the U.S.  That is, states would one by one choose to make it illegal.

That scenario is exactly the one preached by forced birth operatives. I've read countless times of the long battle ahead to convince one state after another to make abortion illegal, collimating in a country where there are no abortions. We now know this rosy scenario did not happen in Kansas.

It would be ironic if Alito was responsible for making abortion more legal across the U.S. That would happen if Kansas if repeated several times. I'm experienced enough to not predict this, yet past experience is abortion rights are popular when voted on directly.

Today I read several Republicans running for Congress are back peddling how terrible all abortion is. They want voters to know rape and the lives of women get a pass. Now that it is obvious lots of Republican voters favor choice those competing in Republican primaries are upping their concern-for-women game. In other places I read women's choice groups across the country are energized.

Political events like the one in Kansas are especially fun to look at after they happen. Forced birth operatives had a scheme they thought was too smart to fail. By putting the anti-abortion measure on a primary ballot instead of on the General Election they were confident a.) the turnout would be small and (b.) it would be mostly Republican voters because there were not competitive races among Democrats. The trouble with such schemes is that sometimes, and only sometimes, people see through the tricks and get angry. That happened in Minnesota a couple of decades ago when a governor resigned so his Lt. Governor could appoint him to Washington. He was defeated in the next election.

Ronald Reagon once said, "Politics is a thing where the unexpected often happens." Judge Alito may see the biggest unexpected final outcome of all.
