Why Have Some Preacher/Priests Morphed into Christian Nationalism

Clergy are trained, or self-taught, the Bible. Those in denominations are taught its tenets. The theory of the faith is the clergy person is to teach the Bible and the denomination's (or some general theme of a kindred set of independent churches) dogma to those in the pews.

The entire economic model requires clergy repeat to the congregation what those in the pews already believe. If the preacher goes too far afield the collection plate will be empty and so salary paid.

A problem discussed widely for several years is preachers/priests who use the pulpit to rail about politics and social behaviors. These tenets are mostly not, as is the case with abortion, in the Bible. They may be part of the denomination's dogma but that doesn't mean they are in the Bible.

There are preachers who believe they are telling their congregation the politics it wants to hear. Then, there are some who know they are risk takers. They preach a politics they know many in the pews do not agree with. Why would they do this?

I'm certain this happens sometimes because clergy become bored with the ordinary topics they are required to talk about. Repeating the same thing they have said countless times in the past is not exciting enough to get them out of bed in the morning. We know from surveys many no longer believe the tenets they preach.

I think many preachers find politics is more fun to talk about from the pulpit than religion. They are thinking, "Being part of politics, who is elected, what laws are passed, it to be part of something big. Talking about the sin of the month is small and boring in comparison." Perhaps some see themselves as persuasive and believe they will bring the congregation to their way of thinking, ensuring they will keep their preaching jobs.

Whatever the reason clergy jump from religion over into politics, it would be best if their church did not get the tax break given religion. The party headquarters, Democrat and Republican, does not receive space free of property taxes. For them, it is pay up. For churches that are campaigning in politics, its a free ride.
