Innovative Business Models are Coming to Provide Abortions


There is a growing sense the effect of abortion bans in some states will reduce total abortions for only a short time, if at all. What is not clear is whether they will affect numbers in the longer term. New ideas are appearing to circumvent the restrictive laws.  Anti-abortion groups will be playing whack-a-mole forever.

A group is now raising funds for a medical ship off the coast in the Gulf of Mexico. It would be in international waters out of reach from the no abortion state governments on the coast. The site "PRROWESSS" is where it is being discussed. Another version of the story is here. I don't understand the economic model of a hospital ship, moving patients by boat and doing abortions in stormy weather. Better it seems is an underground of pills and surgery. 

The world of 24 or 48 hours of waiting and telemedicine abortions is being met by enterprising business people in states adjoining the prohibition states. Inexpensive places to stay with access to telemedicine are quickly being set up.

Once Fargo, ND, where this blog originated was a place which defied moral rules metered out in other states. In the early 1900's other states divorces required long waiting periods. No doubt the theory was the same as today's anti-abortion, if a woman is required to wait before getting a divorce (or abortion), she will change her mind and go back to the person she dislikes. This included husbands who beat their wives and sometimes the opposite. In North Dakota the waiting time was shorter. Women came to Fargo, filed for divorce and stayed until the time requirement was met. Bars were legal in Moorhead, MN, so women lived in Fargo and walked across the bridge to Moorhead for some fun. Several states still have waiting periods. North Dakota does not. One obvious thing, states with waiting periods have similar divorce rates with those who have none. The same with abortion.

The same pattern of the business of abortion which existed before Roe is emerging again. There were doctors giving illegal abortions and amateurs as well. Now with abortion medicines a new ways to get abortions are appearing. 

The success of anti-abortion laws is yet to be seen.

So much about U.S. society and religion can be learned from the Civil War and what happened afterwards. After its defeat, the South started a myth about the unethical soldiers from the North. The South fought for principles of God and states rights. The North did not. It was the South, this propaganda told the country, that had the high moral ground.  The Capitol invaders, encouraged by Trump, swallowed the myth that Biden's election was stolen. Father Frank Pavone, the Ultimate Crook

Recently, the Vatican defrocked Frank Pavone. His diehard fans are outraged. This is because he cleverly manipulated his fans and the press all the while living well from donations and, apparently, abusing some women. By making abortion the "sin" of the century, and himself the main opposition to this one sin, he himself could get away with any sin he pleased.  As the link points out, Pavone was the perfect priest for the Trump era. Trump is so self-important laws have no role in his life. He felt accountable to no one. Women were there to be had. Pavone and Trump are interchangeable.  Pavone was very successful raising money.
