Soon Gay People will not be Called "Sinners" by the Catholic Church

People who watch carefully what the Pope says, what he does and who he appoints have noticed a huge change in the how the church refers to homosexuality. Instead of being a "sin," it's becoming "that-which-is-never- mentioned." I took note of a high Catholic official who recently referred to homosexual sex as a sin. He was quickly demoted.

The approach is typical Catholicism. Official dogma is not changed. When it becomes an embarrassment, it is just no longer mentioned. Believers come to think the church's position has modernized and the approved view is the current one. This, even though it has never officially changed.

I remember seeing a tiny bit of this a few years ago when comedian Bill Maher produced a long documentary lampooning Christianity. Among the many he interviewed was one (or more) retired clergy who had worked in the Vatican. When Maher asked about some absurd current Catholic belief the man just shrugged and said something like, "That was in the old days."  That homosexuality as a "sin" will be like that soon.

Very recently, the Pope held an audience with six out lesbians. It was not on his public schedule. An outreach nun set up the visit and those who were present said they felt had a warm welcome. My assumption is the word "sin" was never spoken.  Perhaps the Pope has read the book on my shelf published in 1985, Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence.

In times past here on the blog Catholics criticized me for my lack of knowledge about specific official Catholic positions. They would instruct me to read the Catholic Encyclopedia. I began reading this huge publication and found what I had been told I would find was not always what was there. If you look it up on line you will find as I did there are both old and outdated viewed as well as newer modern ones. But, the last does not replace the first. They both remain official positions. This is understandable if both positions were given to male clergy as "the word of God." Who is allowed to delete the word of God?

In the coming decades various of today's Catholic positions, anti abortion, anti gay marriage, anti invitro, anti divorce and on and on will be quietly put under wraps and no longer discussed. New sins will be preached.

I'm sure rainbow flags are displayed in some Catholic churches. They will be flying outside on every one soon.
