Florida: Most Anti Abortion State Government, Among the Highest Abortion Rates

Women in Florida are blocked on three sides by water. How will they escape to get abortions? The state has among the highest rates of abortion per 1,000 women but its state politics are crazy for anti-abortion.

This could be about the way abortion data is collected or the age distribution of the population of Florida. Whatever the reason it highlights how complicated it is and will be to limit abortions.

The New York Times carried and article about pre Roe abortion. It was about the laws in some states back then which had experienced high rates of suicide in pregnant women who had sought abortions but been denied. Since anti abortion did not "save a life" in these circumstances legislators in some state passed laws allowing abortion when a licensed psychiatrist declared a woman to be suicidal. Psychiatrists had a variety of reactions to this. A lot of them simply decided this was an opportunity to strike a blow against conservative religion and sign off on every request to get an abortion. My late brother once told me he was one of those doctors. That so many did this was picked up on by politicians and several current state laws make no exceptions.

We all know there are many complicated medical issue for pregnant women and many die in childbirth. To make some kind of calculation that some dead women is a small price to pay for many dead fetuses strikes be as void of moral reasoning. There is no medical or science based opinion that a fetus is a person. Only religion has made this judgement. Those who hold a contrary religious view must not have a different one forced onto them.

The pattern of enforcement of anti abortion laws around the world follows a predictable pattern. It is a pattern anyone with experience in government predict. Enforcement faces a blunt fact. Budgets of law enforcement are not increased to cover the costs of the complicated prosecution of wide spread abortion.

Law enforcement and anti abortion politicians thus agree on how it is to be done. Only the low hanging fruit is picked. This means poor women without a bevy of highly skilled attorneys are singled out for prosecution. These cases are given considerable publicity and politicians tout their anti abortion creds with these cases.

We can look forward to this in Florida.
