It's Show Time for Right Wing Catholic Bishops: Biden's Communion

One has to admit the anti abortion portion of the Catholic Church is a cult within the denomination. While the Pope wants to present the world with a denomination and bishops who are in agreement on how to operate the denomination there is another group who would prefer to see less money and membership. Pope Benedict suggested this latter, a smaller but more "pure" church, was preferable to a larger, wealthier and more politically influential one. The anti abortion cult among Bishops is driving for a vote on whether President Biden should receive communion or not.

It's fun to speculate on whether Trump would have received communion or not had he been a Catholic. It looks to me like he would have. He committed all kinds of "sins" but he said he did not endorse abortions. To some Bishops and lay people there is only on religious issue and if you are on the wrong side you cannot be a "Christian." This even though polling confirms a majority of Catholics favor availability of abortion in at least some circumstances.

That the set of Bishops and laypeople who are obsessed with abortion can be called a cult comes from this definition.  Cult: A misplaced or excessive admiration of a figure or object.

One only has to look at pictures of early anti abortion demonstrations to see the object of worship. It is the picture of the fetus. Anti abortion politics has made looking at the ultra sound of a fetus required before approval of an abortion. Billboards display the fetus. Jesus is pictured holding the fetus. The fetus is important, women are not.

A gathering of U.S. Bishops is coming up. The Pope and many Bishops would prefer to let the matter of Biden's communion remain with his local Priest/Bishop. Right wing Bishops, however, want to dictate to all others who is approved to receive communion or not. There must be many thousands of people every week who do not qualify to receive communion but receive it anyway. Surely local clergy do not make an issue of it most of the time. Just throw down the wafer and wine and move on.

Having a cow over something not important is the hallmark of the two largest denominations, Catholics and Southern Baptists. With Southern Baptists its no women behind the pulpit and no admitting it past was based on slavery. With Catholics it's abortion.

I'm guessing none of these issues are very important to the casual church goer. They are issues that have grabbed limited circles within church hierarchy those obsessed cannot let go.
