A Drag Queen Candidate for Methodist Ministry

The pending separation of the giant Methodist Church came into clear focus recently. A business administration student and candidate for ordination in the ministry  is also a public drag queen performer. He has appeared in drag as a part of a Methodist church service. One part of Methodism will allow this, another not.

This is one of those fascinating moments of clarity when conventional wisdom of some Christianity is confronted with choosing between reality and the myths embedded in ideas of ancient times. Why on earth would someone be denied ordination because he appeared behind the pulpit in drag? Why on earth be denied if he/she appeared married to a same sex partner? It would be ridiculous to deny ordination for either.

Let's speculate on the other large swaths of Christianity, the largest Protestant denomination, Southern Baptist and the Catholic branch would react. Would either grant clergy status to a man appearing in public dressed as a woman or with a same sex spouse?  Shame on me for even asking.

Readers may point out I am unfamiliar with the Bible and that is why I do not understand the seriousness error of allowing a man who dresses in drag to be a Christian preacher. I admit I am not an expert on how men and women are supposed to dress. The authors of the Bible were the experts on this topic. Deuteronomy 22:5 says cross dressing is an abomination. We can see in the picture above a woman doing construction work and dressed for construction work is obviously committing such an abomination.

Paul was an expert on hair. Women must not have haircuts like men. This is because it is unnatural and unnatural haircuts are bad. Paul was also an expert on the way men and women dress. A woman dressed like the one in the picture above is rebelling against God.

Those of us who are unenlightened about Christianity learned last year men dressed as women must not read books to children in libraries. Now we are learning they must not appear in front of a congregation. Some Christians just do no know how to have fun.
