The Best Use of Religion is to use it Against Religion

There can be no doubt slave holders and later segregationists felt confident they held the high moral ground. They were not upended for 400 years. What helped upend them, however, was the rational argument that taking away human freedom was wrong. It was a counter religious argument.

Several things came together to end the 400 years of moral high ground. Slave owners forced Christianity on their slaves. This turned out to be a mistake. Slaves began talking politics in their churches out of earshot from slave owners. When segregation came along, it also was undermined in black churches. Rev. Martin Luther King moved it along in his Atlanta church. King proclaimed it was segregated black people, not segregationists, who held the high moral ground. Now there is a Senator from that church and Georgia went for Biden.

Anti abortionists over and over again claim the high moral ground. They use Christianity to make this claim even though the Bible does not condemn abortion. Women's right advocates have not used religion much to make their case. That is beginning to change. There is no doubt whatsoever the high moral ground will be claimed for abortion rights.

The Church of Satan is trying to do just that now. The idea is so sarcastic, however, I'll be surprised if it is successful. I wish a group would for a Christian church called, What Jesus Really Said. It could focus on what is claimed to have been said by Jesus in the Bible and challenge those parts likely never said. It could highlight he never said anything about gays or abortion. It could focus on Jesus' women colleagues and what seems like equal or preferred status depending on how one looks at it. The new faith would leave out his bad treatment of his mother, Mary.

When the time is right, there is no doubt a strong religious case will be made for abortion and gay rights. It will claim the high moral ground and this will make more sense to the public than the less than honorable case now being made. Today the "high moral ground" case against gay and women's rights is being made by puffed up Protestant preachers and lets-keep-men-in-charge Catholic priests.

These latter are on a slippery slope and are ready to be taken down.
