In Order to Have Unity we Need a Shared Understanding of Facts
President Biden uses the word "unity" frequently. What does it mean?
Certainly, it cannot mean agreement on views about all politics or religion. For the sake of discussion, let's start with abortion.
There is no way anti abortion and pro choice people can agree on all issues surrounding abortion. The good news is there are well established facts available for both sides to agree on. If we start there some level of hostility can be softened.
The first fact is there is no scientific consensus one fertilized egg is a human being. That is a religious belief, not a fact. It should be easy for both sides to agree on this. When the fetus becomes a human being is more difficult but if we start with the one cell we would be ahead of where we are now.
A second fact is that abortion is not dangerous. Deaths from births are more common. There are almost no deaths from abortion.
A third fact we need agreement on are the rights of pregnant women. Pro choice people read the constitution and see the reference to equal rights for all. Anti abortion think the constitution allows women to remain under deep state surveillance during their entire pregnancy.
Fact four is that abortion is a religious controversy, not a secular one. Recognizing this fact will go far in reaching some compromise.
A fifth fact is women who have abortions suffer no more psychological stress or illness than those who give birth. False information has been given to women about this for decades.
There are many other differences between conservative and liberal people where facts are known but ignored by one side or the other. A recent one is the claim Trump would have won but for fraud during the election. The facts from all 50 states are there. Agreement that fraud did not determine the election can be agreed upon by everyone.
We could go on to the environment, health care and effects of growing inequality of income. Let's go with Joe Friday from the Dragnet TV series decades ago, "The facts, Ma'am. Just the facts."

ReplyDeleteI came across an expression in an anti-abortion screed I hadn’t seen before, “pre-born child”, as in a human fertilized ovum, a zygote, is a pre-born child. There is something very odd about that phrase.
Ardy B "pre-born child" Strange, yes. We have a new granddaughter born last Thursday. I guess we will required to refer to her as a "post-born granddaughter." Every living child is not longer a child but a "post-born child." As is often said, "You can't make this stuff up."

Meanwhile, the real people that lead the breaking into the Capitol were (gasp) registered democrats beginning 56 minutes prior to Trump finishing his speech in the ellipse. False flag scammers. No unity possible with that.
