Who Was Solmon and How Wise Was He
Several books that originally were in the Bible were tossed in the 1600's. There is not a record as to why they were tossed. Those who did the dirty deed were in power and needed no one's permission.
One was written by Solmon, considered the wises man ever. In the Wisdom of Solomon, 2:1-24, he discusses his views on several topics. He says no one has ever returned from the grave. Our bodies turn into ashes. Our names are forgotten in time.
Adding to his wisdom, he says we should drink wine and enjoy ourselves because this is the only life we get. He get a little less charitable talking about poor people. He thinks they are rather useless.
Along with being a wealthy person, Solomon was reported to have a weakness for women.
Early on, Solomon's book was in the Bible. Then it was removed. That is too bad because it has some material that makes sense to those of us who don't think the God of Bible exists nor does the heaven and hell.
There are volumes written about why Solomon's book was dumped. For our purposes here, its being dumped confirmed the faith does change over time. Some ideas are in favor for a while and then disappear when times change. When these changes take place someone thinks the old views need improvement and has better ideas for the future.
The generalization that Solomon was "wise" then needs some qualifications. He was considered wise in some ways and not wise in others.
In might be helpful to regard all the gods humans have ever worshipped in the same way. That is, they had helpful things to offer at one point in history but not everything about them was helpful. In time they each became on balance unhelpful and were forgotten.
At one point in time, each of these gods was considered to be the only real god and the one who would last forever. Unfortunately, what was learned by humans over time, that no god is good enough to stand up to changing times, is lost on the majority of humans living today.

ReplyDeletetsm "It was not written by Solomon but rather attributed to him..."
DeleteWelcome to the club of skeptics. You (and Bart Ehrman) and a small army of readers do not believe Solomon actually wrote the Song of Solomon. And, you agree with me the Song of Solomon was dumped from the "approved" books that made it into the Bible we use today. When you write, "for whatever reason," that is my point. That is was dropped is the argument I make when some Christians claim "the faith never changes." It changes (for whatever reasons).
The faith changes because the market for it changes. It changes to survive. Faiths that don't change fast enough die and are forgotten.
