Like the Cartoon, Lucy, Anti Abortion Leaders Keep Pulling the Football from Supporters

Catholic Bishops and conservative Protestants held news conferences during the campaign and appealed for money. They said over and over the election coming up was about abortion. The sitting President released another list of conservative judges he would appoint to the Supreme Court just as he had done four years ago. And, just as they had done four years ago, anti abortion leaders pledged, "We are almost there. Send money. Reelect President Trump and abortion is gone."

It reminds one of the story line in the famous cartoon series, Charlie Brown. Every fall the cartoonist would began again a series where Lucy would promise Charlie she would hold the football in place and let Charlie kick it. Charlie was always reluctant to believe her but ultimately thought she, finally, would not pull it away just as he kicked it. Always, with a mischievous grin she would pull it away.

I read an essay written by an anti abortion leader who predicted his career path this way. We will overturn Roe, he said, then state by state we will pass legislation outlawing abortion. This is a pledge for several decades of fund raising and lucrative careers for leaders of the anti abortion scheme.

Even pundits with decades of experience in politics cannot grasp the futile nature of the ruse. Peggy Noonan of the Wall Street Journal could not vote for Trump or Biden. Trump was too incompetent and Biden too liberal on abortion. Abortion caused her not to vote for Biden. Millions of voters, so it appears, voted to Trump solely because he was against abortion.

Up to election day, anti abortion operatives pleaded, "We just need you one more time. Send money, vote for Trump and we win." Even today they are using that line. They want more money to over tune the results of counting the votes. It will not be successful. Lucy pulled the football. Charlie fell on his face.

I don't understand how the Court can over turn Roe. Roe concluded women have a right to privacy. Is the Court going to reverse itself and say pregnant women have no right to privacy? Privacy is the central issue. Without the right of privacy pregnant women will be treated like parolees and need to check in with law enforcement regularly throughout a pregnancy. Claims of miscarriage will require law enforcement investigation.
