Colorado Voters Bury Another Anti Abortion Measure

The anti abortion industry often claims it it making progress against legal abortions. It must do this to keep the cash flow that supports the thousands who make their living opposing abortion. The industry must repeat over and over, "We are just on the cusp of outlawing abortion." To admit this is not true would shut off the money spigot.

Yet, in state after state, anti abortion measures are defeated. Yesterday another bit the dust in Colorado. This was to make abortions after 22 weeks illegal. It failed by 59%. This was the fourth try at limiting abortion in Colorado in the last 12 years. To say Colorado is on the cusp of limiting abortion is a joke.

I have tried to help the anti abortion people who keep trying and failing with these measures. I point out that with half the population being women and a large percentage of them having had abortions, or supporting a daughter or sister, any measure to limit abortions starts out in a hole. If anti abortion people want to limit abortions it is time to compromise.

The kind of compromise I suggest in national sites where this is argued and here on the discussion page is that anti abortion people should promote some rights for pregnant women other than simply being forces to give birth. Giving birth is more dangerous than having an abortion. Strangely, there is never a response. Zero. It is as if I am talking to someone in a foreign language.

This dead zone of rights for pregnant women has only one explanation. It is an explanation I first heard 40 years ago and repeated many times since. The anti abortion politics are not really about abortion, they are about subjugating and punishing women. This is the only available explanation. If there were interest in helping women there would not be such silence.

Tuesday included the election of pro choice Joe Biden. Together with Colorado's pro choice win the table is set for at least a few years of protection from anti abortion laws against women.

  1. Abortion become decriminalized in 1973 by a US Supreme Court decision. It is as close to being criminalized by the current US Supreme Court as ever.
