Abortion Rights has Moved From Ireland to Northern Ireland

If news were not bad enough for those who pretend one fertilized cell is a human being, it only gets worse. Abortion rights Joe Biden was elected President in the U. S. and Northern Ireland, always thought of as an anti abortion bastion, saw its Parliament vote by a large margin to allow some abortions up to birth. Women in Northern Ireland now have abortion rights just as those in Ireland which added rights by popular nation-wide vote over a year ago.

While I don't claim to know what goes on in the internal politics of Northern Ireland, it is not hard to figure out. First, getting across the straights to England where a citizen of Northern Ireland can get an abortion free of charge is a quick flight. Then there was Ireland next door giving the bird to Catholic clergy who had insisted the people of Ireland must vote against legal abortion. Why would Protestants in Northern Ireland not have the same disregard for their clergy? On top of those two, ascendance of women's rights is happening all over the world. Every religion in the world, including Christianity, is going to have to come to terms with this change.

The entire anti abortion industry faces a reality it cannot overcome. It is that most everywhere in the world women with some money can get an abortion. Women with no money either have self administered abortions or give birth. If you are a political leader anywhere in the world you want the middle and upper classes expanding because they do not require subsidies. Poor people are the ones who need subsidies. By restricting abortions the poorest segment of the public expands and the wealthiest contracts. Anti abortion complicates fiscal management. When a country is already poor it is hard to support policies that make it poorer.

Northern Ireland is not a poor country. But its politicians recognize women are a large part of their politics and their economy. Penalizing the poorest of women is not morally defensible nor is it sound fiscal management.

  1. dumb. dumb and dumber. Far from being a Catholic country No Ireland has been a strongly Protestant area. as I recall, Scott Calvinists settled there by James I. Consequently, it has been a source of conflict with Ireland for many years. Remember the conflict between No Ireland Protestants and Catholics in the 1980s? No surprise here tho'. Jon is often short on facts and long on spin. BTW Jon, the No. Ireland Prots were very much opposed to abortion.

    1. Unknown--Northern Ireland's history is Catholic. Now it is about 40% Catholic. That Northern Ireland's Protestants "were very much opposed to abortion" is now, apparently, no longer true. The Republic of Ireland is 78% Catholic. It's voters overwhelmingly approved legal abortion last year.

  2. good try but not very convincing. of course No Ireland was once Catholic. then in the 17th century or there about it became aggressively Protestant. now the Catholics have come back to some extent, the interreligious warfare having been cooled largely due to the reaction to a common enemy, namely the Brits. as far as I know, both parties are still mostly opposed to abortion but having had it thrust down their throats there is not much that they can do. BTW do you know about the British attempts to suppress Catholicism in Ireland. my advice old man, get you facts right before you throw out your swill on your blog.

Politics in Northern Ireland have changed, just as they have changed in the Republic of Ireland. Women don't put up with the old white men rules, especially those of the old white religious men, anymore.

  4. Ireland and Northern Ireland have lost a lot of their Christian identity over 2-3 generations. Like cultural Jews, there are also cultural Muslims, cultural Catholics and cultural Protestants of various denominations. The common thread through each is that they pick and choose what they want to believe. This gives them some comfort but their souls are in jeopardy.

The pathway to Heaven is narrow and long. The pathway to Hell is broad and short.

I pray for all to choose the narrow and long. It is also the difficult road. But life on earth is short compared to eternal life elsewhere.

The Devil likes to talk of "old white men rules", old fashioned ideas, being odd, being out of step, being oppressive, and "old white religious men".

Jesus likes to talk of love (the 2 greatest commandments), mercy, forgiveness, charity, chastity, purity, holiness, prayer, hope, sacrifice, suffering and salvation.

    Choose wisely.

  5. to the extent of my knowledge of the situation, both the Catholics and Protestants actively resisted attempts to impose abortion on No Ireland.

  6. Unknown--"resisted attempts to impose abortion on No Ireland" Here are the facts. This was published several months ago, June 30, 2020 from a source in Norther Ireland: "The Northern Ireland Abortion regulations 2020 allow elective abortions up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, up to 22 weeks when the mother's physical or mental health is in endangered.....Accordingly to the Health Minister 129 abortions took place between March 31 and May 22nd in Northern Ireland."

The article went on to say some other legislative body wanted to alter this law but I could not understand what that referred to or what happened.
