President Trump Plays John Wayne

President Trump's tough-guy-against-the-virus act is loaded with masculinity. It is, "I am man, not woman." The entire persona he tries to portray is aimed at men. Even his Supreme Court Nominees are all about reducing women's rights and expanding those of men.

I'll be the first to admit there are lots of women who do not want equal rights. I've even read about women in the Middle East who do not want the right to drive automobiles. They like having men drive them around--it's one less thing they have to do.

It is not a surprise that Trump is not polling as well with women as he is with men. Part of the strategy, I suppose, is that since men are "in charge", they will tell women how to vote.

I recall many decades ago a member of the House of Representatives, Adam Clayton Powell from Harlem. He missed many House votes late in his career because he liked to spend time on the Island of Bimini. When he received 80% of the Harlem vote reporters asked voters why they supported Powell. The answer often was that if they themselves held the House seat they would do what Powell did.

There must be some of that in the male support for Trump. Some men rationalize that if they had his money and status they, too, would have affairs while married and support repeal of women's rights.

A pundit today mused about something he suspects, doesn't know for sure. Like any of us he is being a pundit. He suspects  the "silent majority" who have not been accurately represented in polls and surprise everyone by streaming into the voting booths will not be rural men as conventional wisdom predicts but will be women. They will be from in every social economic class and geographical area. Trump lost with women 13% four years ago. Republican strategists have worried over the four years that number could rise to the high teens. Now there is talk of tsunami where he will be down over 20% and this will tip some traditionally Republican states.

Will that happen? Your guess is as good as anyone's.

  1. fanatics certainly have a way of twisting just about anything in a way that comports with their ideological mind set. now Trump is like John Wayne. and we are subjected to a lecture about how badly women are treated. and of course abortion is dragged into the picture, kicking and screaming. apart from that, there is his remark about feeling twenty years younger: that makes him macho. BS, when I had a heart attack some years back (with stent insertion) I went home feeling much better than I had felt for quite some time. I was very relieved and very pleased. as I am sure that the Prez was. so old man, get a grip: you are only making yourself look foolish.

  2. Jon,
I see Trump more like P.T. Barnum. A showman, politician, business man in that order. Always a showman by profession. Both switched political parties from Democrat to Republican. Barnum over the slavery issue. Trump did the old switcheroo at least five times. It’s a safe bet to put money in his own pocket. Some say Barnum never used the phrase, “There's a sucker born every minute.” Most say Trump lives by the maxim. Bully yes, tough guy no. At any rate here we are witnessing D.J. Trump’s “Greatest Show on Earth” with clowns, acrobats, lots of side shows, and of course elephants.

Good post. My own prediction is if he loses the election he will turn on the religious right. "I supported them. They promised to get me reelected. Didn't keep there promise. Anti abortion, prayers, all that stuff is for losers."
