A Preacher Says, "Parents, Don't Let Your Daughters Go To College"

A preacher who calls himself a bishop tells parents the only route to happiness for women is for them to submit to the authority of men. College might put them above men in status and result in an unhappy woman. Just say no is his advice to parents.

I remember at a workplace over 50 years ago a discussion among men older than me. They were discussing their teenage children. One of them was adamant he would pay for his son's college education but not his daughter's. "She will get married and be the responsibility of her husband."

Even though it is becoming increasingly obvious male superiority is a thing from back in the Middle Ages, efforts to keep it in place continue. A large swath of the Christian faith holds fast to male only clergy. While parts of the faith broke free from this long ago it persists in other parts. I think it remains in 50% or more of the membership of all denominations totaled together. The basis for it is nothing more than men trying to hold onto powerful positions within religion.

There is plenty of contempt for women in our society. Some of it even comes from women themselves. Perhaps the latter results from hearing they are unworthy for all of their lives and cannot see their way clear to another point of view.

The upcoming election will determine much about the future freedoms and opportunities for women. Parts of the Catholic Church and parts of Protestantism have declared this election is about one issue, abortion. Much of the liberal and women's right political group has said the same thing. There is no single policy that can have a larger effect on women than the availability of abortions. Today I heard a paid political ad from the Biden campaign pledging to defend abortion rights. If he wins no one can claim they were unaware of his intentions to keep abortion available.

I hope most parents of daughters want their daughters to have the opportunities in life they deserve. We all are the better for it.

Another factor is the long term social impact of the pandemic. Some see lower birth rates, postponed marriages, no increase in kindness, empathy, and compassion, large scale spread of misinformation, and sadly, a backslide in gender equality.(1)

Discouraging young females from going to college, encouraging their submission to men, and the deliberate “re-domestication” of women will tickle the fancy of many conservative men and women. That approach will dumb down the nation, diminish our capacity to compete, and threaten national security. Resisting, not succumbing, to the headwinds of the pandemic’s social impact should be the clarion call.

I agree. From what one reads, mothers more often than fathers are quitting their jobs to do the home schooling. And, think of all the adults with children being forced out of their apartments/houses because they are not able to pay their rent. I hope somehow our country can regain its resolve toward equal opportunity.
