Trump said, "I like the uneducated." So Does Satan

An interesting and hard to understand trend has been emerging in religion. It is that the less education one has the more, not less, likely he/she is to be religious. This flies in the face of the popular notion colleges are full of liberal professors with their tweed sport jackets and leather elbows prying their students away from the religion of their parents. The population of "nones", those who claim no religious affiliation, is more common among young people who never attended college than among those who did.

We know that President Trump was popular four years ago among those who had not attended college. The President was also the toast of the right wing Christian world. This political marriage of non college and Christians was peculiar because those who have not attended college are polling less religious than those who have graduated college. What could be the reason President Trump did well with the non college voters?

I can't say I really know, but it is fun to be an armchair commentator. I think he did well with the non college voters because they have not been doing as well economically as several other parts of society. Women have been rising in economic status--not doing as well yet as men but rising. Black people have been seem their economic status rising--not equal to white people but rising. This has been especially true of college educated women and black people.

But non college have not been rising in economic status at all (as a group, I'm not talking about individuals). Trump railed against the same groups the non college voters railed against. The non college group, however, was not very religious and not invested in anti abortion.

What does that mean for today and the election coming up? My guess is the right wing religious faction got what it wanted from Trump. The non college faction, however, is no better off and for many worse off after Trump's four years. Because they are not as religious their interest in his anti abortion judges may not be there.

It's the best political theater in years.

  1. How elitist. Arrogance does not wear well on you. In my circle, I personally know many credentialed people who conduct themselves with humility. Objectivity goes hand in hand with humility. A gift you are short of. What you may call objective is narrow and biased with an abundance of skill in twisting and misrepresenting. When caught, you refuse to print.

  2. In addition; And I'm not talking about Trump or Biden, abortion, LGBTQ, race issues. All are just symptoms that go far beyond the level of education.
