Trump Says Biden, "Will hurt the Bible, will hurt God."

While President Trump has fumbled with religion several times while trying to appeal to the religious, this ad lib that Biden will hurt the Bible and hurt God was the most interesting. The next phrase he muttered was that Biden will "take our guns." It's back to the old "God and guns" campaign of a few years back. It seems to me we have new issues and the culture is different now.

I wonder how one goes about hurting the Bible and hurting God. In the U. S. when asked, "Do you believe in God?", about 2.7 million people answered "No." The number of atheists in the world has been estimated to be between 500-750 million. What is meant by the word atheist can alter that number.

I wish I could remember the number of times when sitting in a circle of avid atheists someone has said, "I was a Christian until I read the Bible. After that, no."

Bart Ehrman, a famous author of books treating the Bible as literature instead as a worship book had a long road of studying the Bible. He graduated from the Moody Bible Institute which left him with countless memorized passages from the Bible. He quoted them often when defending the faith.

He entered graduate school fully expecting to broaden his defense of the Bible as God's word and to become a pastor. In grad school he studied the Bible even more in its original languages. It was there he developed doubts about the history portrayed in the Bible and about its miracles and far flung claims of the after life.

Catholics don't say this directly so far as I know, but the clergy that runs the place seems to recognize that if people read the Bible themselves they will smell things like Ehrman did. They want the faithful not to read it but to listen to the clergy's version of what it says and means. Even though that is not saving Catholic numbers, it is a good strategy to combat people who read the Bible themselves and don't like what it says.

We know Trump makes outrageous statements and never defends them so we can assume he has no idea how Biden would "hurt the Bible and hurt God." Biden is not needed. The Bible and God hurt themselves.

  1. Jon, “We know Trump makes outrageous statements and never defends them so we can assume he has no idea how Biden would "hurt the Bible and hurt God.“

You are correct. Trump knows he’s pitching indefensible crap. But it’s effective at grabbing the news cycle and feeding his base. They eat it up and don’t care if it’s nonsense so there is no need to defend. I’m reminded of Brandolini’s Law or The Bullshit Asymmetry Principle: “The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it.”, Alberto Brandolini.

How Trump, a lifelong charlatan, managed to sell himself as a devote Christian, an anointed one, is less a statement on his skill as a mercenary huckster than, in my opinion, evidence of the waning credibility of the faith. “Now he who plants and he who waters are one; but each will receive his own reward according to his own labor.”(1) Even now beware the plant you water.

The BS in Trump’s campaign runs deep. His trade advisor Navarro has been quoted saying the Lord created executive orders. As a measure of campaign morality, my wife said she read during his latest Ohio trip “Live and Let Die” by Wings was used as a theme song. Oh well, Yo Semites which way to Thighland?

    (1) 1 Corinthians 3:8

Anti abortion support of Trump, watering anti abortion politics, is sort of expected. Anti abortion politics is full of lies starting with the fertilized one cell is a human being and adding that abortion is dangerous to women. Such politics, then, would be attacked to a politician who lies every day. If only they had read 1 Corinthians 3:8 before they made their big mistake.

  3. Just finished 27 hours without electricity. Fortunately I had a camping stove and battery boom box to watch a movie. Some Iowa areas, Cedar Rapids will be w/o for a few days.
