The Mish Mash of Views About Spirits and Demons is Growing

Today I learned spiritual demons are causing all of our problems.

The link is about one of President Trump's new religious heroes, Dr. Stella Immanuel. Trump tweeted about a video she made praising his cure for the Coronavirus, hydroxychoroquine. Later Trump claimed he knew nothing about her. There is plenty to know.

Dr. Immanuel is steeped in the African culture of demons. She can tell you about "demon sperm," "demon sex," and "generational curses." These are concepts with their roots in the Mountain of Fire Ministries, Lagos, Nigeria from 1989. That church has roots further back to a Nigerian tradition, Christ Apostalic Church in 1941. This history, of course, plots the organizations with records and not religious folk traditions starting who knows when. The current version of the faith is expanding across the world and includes several churches in the U.S.

According to some writers, Christian missionaries went into Africa unprepared for the onslaught of spiritual beliefs there. They thought they could explain to the locals their spirits were merely superstitions. Not so says Trump's Dr. Immanuel. These spirits are real and are trying to dictate the lives of everyone of us. Thank goodness for the Christian Holy Spirit, she says. Only the Holy Spirit is a match for all the evil spirits and demons.

The spirits Dr. Immanuel teaches us include witchcraft caused by witches, spiritual curses caused by ancestors and marine curses caused by women. Of course the Coronavirus is caused by demons which must be defeated before the virus will go away.

It is this latter goal, defeating the spiritual demons that cause the virus, that is central to a conflict with government. It is impossible to defeat these demons without holding church. To not hold church is to let the demons and their disease go on unchallenged.

It's good to know about yet another version of Christianity.

  1. Jon,
Along with today’s growing mishmash of views on demons I think it is worth mentioning, as a word of caution from history, how the teaching and preaching of demons and devils can evolve into lethality for humankind.

I cite as an example the Catholic Churches pogrom originating in the 15th century, authorized by Pope Innocent VIII’s papal bull “Summis desiderantes affectibus” (“desiring with supreme ardor”) in response to the “Malleus Maleficarum” (“The Hammer of Witches”) written by the Catholic clergyman Heinrich Kramer. The result, the stench of burning flesh in the German breeze and elsewhere.

Trump’s elevation of the not so therapeutic Dr. Stella Immanuel to celebrity status breathed new life into the war on demons by some fringe Christian sects. To date it may be an exaggeration that this “spiritual warfare” will lead to persecution of people falsely accused of hosting demons but attacks on LGBTQ people and demonizing women that seek abortions by some of these zealots is in my opinion two steps toward Salem.
