Mayor Pete Buttigieg Takes a Temporary Appointment at Notre Dame



Mayor Pete, gay, pro choice and pro gay marriage, has been given an annual research award position at the Catholic institution, Notre Dame University. Oh my, there is bitterness. The link is written by a priest who is a Professor of History and Notre Dame and hates it that the University honors politicians who do not conform to instructions from Rome.

What we might call "the Catholic world" is filled with defiance to church teachings. The German branch of the church pays lots of money into Rome's coffers.  To keep the government collecting voluntary fees from taxpayers ear marked for the church the German church has to conform to some extent to societal values. If people are indifferent they may not object to paying the fee. If they are straight up mad, well, that's taking a risk. So, the German church does not condemn gay marriage, Rome objects but Germany does not conform.

Remember the Catholic Church claims it has a linage from Peter. Jesus allegedly told Peter to build the church. So it is claimed Peter was the first Pope and all clergy including the Pope carry license from this sentence. 

In China, the government is now assigning some of the Bishops instead of Rome. When Jesus told Peter to "build the church" did he imply, "but let the Chinese Communist Government build some of it?" China, like German, listens and smiles but ignores Rome.

Smiling and ignoring Rome and the conservatives is exactly what Notre Dame is doing. For it to remain a prestigious university it must recognize the findings of science, social science and history. The student body and faculty must have a diversity of backgrounds, religion and values that reflect contemporary society. There is a active GLBT student group at Notre Dame. Now there is Pete Buttigieg. 

Rome cannot dictate to Catholic institutions if it does not provide all the money these institutions need. Power comes from funding. The simple explanation still holds, "To understand, follow the money."

In reference to the sexual orientation of Catholic clergy, “A priest in Florida put it this way: a third are gay, a third are straight and a third don’t know what the hell they are.”(3). Does the priesthood exemplify Catholic identity and authentic integrated intellectual, spiritual, and moral formation? If not who does, the re-invigorated homophobic Catholic militants? Chances are some of that cohort are closeted and hiding out in their homophobia.

    Of course the “troubled hearts” at Notre Dame also point to Buttigieg’s pro-abortion position. As Trump says about the COVID death count, Pete’s stance on abortion “It is what it is.”. Maybe some of the hand-wringers could stand a little of Pete’s openness and honesty, traits which are catalysts to building trust.

      Ardy B Good post on the question of who is qualified to unequivocally determine what is a Catholic. For that matter, what is a Christian. When 99% of Catholics practice artifical birth control it seems like that is the real Catholic position.

So much about U.S. society and religion can be learned from the Civil War and what happened afterwards. After its defeat, the South started a myth about the unethical soldiers from the North. The South fought for principles of God and states rights. The North did not. Recently, the Vatican defrocked Frank Pavone. His diehard fans are outraged. This is because he cleverly manipulated his fans and the press all the while living well from donations and, apparently, abusing some women.
