Maybe Alien Worship is the Next Big Thing

If Christianity continues its long-lasting slide in popularity, what could slip in to replace it. The majority of humans like imagining there is something bigger than what they can actually see and feel. To me, the next big religion would involve technology and places that both exist in reality but are mysterious because we have never been there. Outer space is such a place. There are several religions that look to aliens for the super natural.

One already available was written up recently. It has been here since the 1950's. A taxi driver in England heard a distinct voice and recorded exactly what it told him. It told him to start a new religion based on extraterrestrial life. If this sounds familiar then you are recalling Jesus told Peter to run a religion and Joseph Smith who Jesus tell him to start the Mormons. George King, the taxi driver, was told to  start the Aetherius Society. It now has 35 centers all over the world. The link shows a worship ceremony where a member prays into a machine. The machine accumulates many prayers and then sends them into space.

After Jesus talked to God he became a "holy figure." George King never made the claim of being a deity even though he had received clear instructions about being a religious leader.

The Aetherius Society's focus is on each person being a force for good. To be generous with one's money and time is to be virtuous. As a worshipper points out, the sun gives itself away without expecting anything in return. That, he says, is what he wants of himself.

If there are Christians who read about the Aetherius Society and George King I would guess most would be very skeptical of King's experience. They would say, probably, it took place only in his mind.

That is why atheists and Christians have so much in common. Atheists are skeptical of all invisible gods. Christians join with atheists in this skepticism of all gods except their own.

Maybe one day they will agree all invisible gods exist only in the minds of humans.

  1. Jon, “Maybe Alien Worship is the Next Big Thing”

“Q is a fictional character as well as the name of a race in Star Trek appearing in the Next Generation ... He is an extra-dimensional being of unknown origin who possesses immeasurable power over time, space, the laws of physics, and reality itself, being capable of altering it to his whim.“(1) I guess Q can be termed an alien.

Maybe it’s a different Q, who knows, but Q is a new prophet for many far right Conservative Christians just in time for disillusioned evangelicals.(2) I do not know if this Q is male, female, transsexual, or an It. I’ll use he. He randomly posts cryptic coded Q tips on 8Chan, a message board, said to be linked to white supremacism, neo-Nazism, the alt-right; well you get the drift. His “ministry” has grown by leaps and bounds in the Trump era. Q’s acolytes interpret the cryptic Q tips and spin them into the most bizarre conspiracy theory you can imagine, QAnon. Of course Trump is a super hero, the messiah, fighting against a latter day Moloch, a worldwide cabal of satanic pedophiles that eat children run by the deep state government, media, business and Hollywood. Trump was quoted saying, “They like me. I appreciate that.” The FBI has declared QAnon a domestic terrorism threat. Of course that tickled the movement’s fancy.

So here we have something approaching alien worship complete with a prophet, a testament, a creed “Where We Go One, We Go All“, clergy, a choir of zealots, a burgeoning flock and a messiah. Sounds like a religion to me.

    1. neo-Nazism. getting a little tired of that one. I also wager that had you been in Germany in the 1930s you would have been giving the Hitler salute. many so called liberals ended up doing just that. BTW, I know nothing about Q. but I do know a lot about cultural Marxists and other assorted leftwing folks.
