How Much Tax Money Will Go To Christian Churches Before This Is Over

We know the virus crisis continues to unfold in unpredictable directions. Money is being shoveled in various directions including, in the U.S., to churches. Just where this will end and how much churches will be subsidized is something to watch with concern. In Ireland there are estimates Catholic church donations are down by 80%.

If donations to churches remain low, will Federal/State governments allow any of them to close? All around the world restaurants are closing permanently. Show business enterprises are mostly shuttered. In fact any business that requires audiences or crowds to sustain itself is on or close to the chopping block. Churches are this type of business, but they are being well subsidized.

I've already read there is political resistance to sending tax bailout money to Muslim churches. They certainly are eligible along with Jewish temples and the Church of Satan. Atheism is often referred to as a "religion" by Christians. Surely our local group should receive some money to pay for our Sunday morning brunches. (just joking here) Unfortunately we do not have any preachers or staff to support so we can't ask for that.

In my view, it would be the ultimate stupidity if large numbers of people become homeless because they do not have money for their rent while churches receive subsidies. Better would be to close down churches and use the buildings for cheap housing.

When I was a Mayor there was still a lot of talk about nuclear attacks. I attended periodic briefings about the bunker-like place I would stay in and the chain of command that would go into effect. Today there are gatherings like that to discuss flood planning.

When we see current affairs we realize there are no plans in place for a sudden economic collapse like the one we are experiencing. Decisions are being made on the fly without time for thought, much debate or reflection.

If there were such time to think over priorities, religion might not rank so high.

  1. You're smoking too much of that Zap (ND) blend. I tried to make sense of your post today and got whiplash going from one non sequitur to another.

For example, money being shoveled to US churches. Where? What churches? How much? What is a shovel-full of money? I'm sure you are watching with concern but I doubt you have any answers to my questions.

Will government allow churches to close? Since when does any government body "allow" churches to close? Huh? What are you thinking?

Audiences? The Medora Musical is in full swing. Looking to book some tickets. Trump rallies - going on. Biden is holding rallies in his basement with his black mask on --- does that count as an audience if Jill is the only one in attendance?

I'd really like you to speak with a Muslim (do you?) about his "church". He might give you that pained, 'are you ok?' look, and then either politely correct you or spit on your shoes. You might look up the meaning of the word 'mosque'.

Do you think the government gives money to churches to keep their doors open? You seem to think so. I believe the government provides money to faith-based social programs but nothing to put on the Christmas play, pay for communion wafers or pave the parking lot.

Somehow, the Catholic faith and Protestantism survived government persecution, several plagues, multiple wars and stark poverty. We managed to give birth to the modern medical systems, now highly expensive with government approval. Schools, universities, architecture, engineering, astronomy.

Crack a book and open a mind.

You can now come out from the rock you have been living under:

    2. Any for profit or non-profit can apply for and receive covid-related government stimulus. Sanford is a non-profit. The NFL is a non-profit. Harvard and Yale are non-profits. Watching with concern over every school and hospital getting shovels of money?

Either way, these are one-time funds, and only if employers keep their employees employed.

    3. I read your article linked on MSN. Lots of great quotes from anti-Catholic sources. But the money is going to retain employees. Just what PPP is supposed to do.

Look at Yale for a scandal. Or Dr. Phil. DP is a true PPP abuser. Ellen DeGeneres?

  2. During an appearance on The Reidout on MSNBC, Joe Biden said, “We have a whole group of lawyers who are going out to every polling— every uh, voter, voter registration physician in the states— the secretaries of state, making sure that they, in fact, have a game plan as to how they’re going to allow the voting to take place.”

Former White House Physician Dr. Ronny Jackson recently called for Biden to submit to a cognitive assessment.

I’m not comfortable with him being my president,” Jackson told The Kyle Olson Show earlier this month.

  3. Matt--Fun to see you taking the daily talking points required by the Trump campaign and putting them here in our discussion posts.

As to bringing up the gaffs of Joe Biden and trying to make the case he is mentally incompetent, I've seen commentary by political strategists who think is a mistake for the Trump campaign to be doing this. What it does, they say, is to bring attention to Trump's own perceived mental weaknesses. It's as if Trump is saying, "You think I'm nuts? This other guy is more nuts than I am."

What Trump should be doing right now is symbolic events that show him to be a person like the rest of us. He should drive around the White House on the riding mower. He should go to a farm and ride or drive a combine. He should have a news conference with workers in a nursing home.

He cannot do these kinds of events, however, because he is a really different bird. He has nothing in common with these ordinary people, cannot identify with them so he cannot appear like them.

    1. So, Trump has "perceived mental weaknesses". True, mentally he is not able to perform any kind of surgery, work on my Chevrolet, write software of any kind or design Bobcat loaders. As for his mental acuity, his penchant for being a workaholic, his grasp of the facts, knowledge of the options and ability to multi-task, he is probably the sharpest pencil in the classroom. Joe has the same mental weaknesses I mentioned for Trump but Joe has no mental acuity, no penchant for working hard, is mentally unable to grasp facts, could perhaps have 2 options on any issues and could not multi-task if the tasks were putting on a t-shirt and speaking at the same time.

The points which you glibly dismiss as talking points are points which bear repeating and demand answers. Instead of directly addressing them, you deflect, thereby acknowledging your uneasiness with the answers. The answers are damaging to your cause, damaging to your politics and embarrassing on all fronts.

Here's a President Biden gaffe for you. Joe, "Oh, don't push the red button. That launches the missiles at China. What happens now?" Or this one, Joe, "I'm sorry. Is JFK dead or was that Nixon? Should I send flowers? Should I send the VP to the funeral? Oh, they died a long time ago, I'm sorry."

  4. Matt 6:09 "Joe has ...no penchant for working hard."

I used the word "perceived" about Trump's mental where-with-all because my observation is the majority of voters now find his mental state is, to put it carefully, lacking.

I saw some interesting poll numbers about Trump's perceived energy versus that of Biden. In spite of Trump's tweets about "sleepy Joe" a large majority of the respondents thought Biden has more energy than Trump. My guess is that result comes from Trump's constant presence in the news usually repeating the same style so it has come to reflect weariness. Biden is the news less than Trump and maybe he is perceived as a fresh and more interesting personality.

As they say, in politics, perception is reality.
